CASE STUDY: Banking Tech Observability - 100% migration from AppDynamics to Open-Source

Submitted Oct 16, 2025

Our session will cover the practical journey of migrating a large-scale Banking mobile application and netbanking platform from AppDynamics to a fully open-source observability stack. We will provide an in-depth walkthrough of how we leveraged OpenTelemetry for distributed tracing, adopted Micrometre and prom-client for robust metrics collection, and integrated Istio to tap into network/data plane insights. Visualisation and real-time monitoring were powered by Grafana, bringing all observability signals into a single pane for actionable insights.

We will also address the key challenges we faced with AppDynamics—including high licensing costs and limitations for rapid customisation—which led us to embrace open source solutions. The session will showcase our migration architecture, the strategies used to ensure seamless cutover, and how the transition was achieved at record pace for business-critical systems. The aim is to offer actionable lessons for teams considering or executing similar migrations, with a focus on agility, cost-effectiveness, and future-proofing observability stacks.

Participants will gain practical, first-hand exposure to the realities of migrating from commercial APM tools to a fully open-source observability stack, with insights into both the challenges faced and the tangible benefits achieved. The session will also deliver high-level architectural lessons and actionable advice drawn from our four to five months of hands-on experience, equipping attendees with guidance for planning and executing similar migrations in their own organisations.

This session will be highly beneficial for Site Reliability Engineers, Resiliency Engineers, DevOps teams, and engineering leaders who are evaluating or planning significant moves in observability strategy. It will also offer valuable insights for organisational strategists and decision-makers responsible for shaping cloud-native or on-premises observability platforms, as well as anyone involved in driving technical transformation within technology-driven enterprises.

This session will be conducted by senior members of the engineering and SRE team at Kotak Mahindra Bank, who have led the core migration initiative.

Naresh K N (Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Kotak Mahindra Bank)

Lohith Hanumaiah (Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Kotak Mahindra Bank)

Gaurav Agarwal (Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Kotak Mahindra Bank)

Collectively, the team brings extensive hands-on expertise in observability, distributed systems, and resilient infrastructure for banking technology platforms.
