[Linux kernel devsprint/ sending patches to mainline kernel]

Submitted Oct 7, 2024

I’ll describe the following in detail, and this session will provide a hands-on experience for the attendees.

  1. Understanding the Kernel Release Life Cycle.
  2. Making a Change to the Codebase.
  3. Creating a Patch.
  4. Sending the Patch to the Maintainers.
  5. Getting Feedback and Making Revisions (v2, v3, etc.).
  6. Patch Acceptance and Merging

Takeaways from this session

  • Structured Contribution Process: Contributing to the Linux kernel involves a well-defined process, including identifying the area of change, adhering to coding standards, creating patches, and submitting them to the appropriate maintainers for review

  • Challenges for New Contributors: It can be difficult for newcomers to find “good first issues” for contributing to the Linux kernel. By providing specific issues to attendees I can help them kickstart their journey in kernel development.

  • Potential Growth in Contributions: By guiding new contributors and helping them find starting points, the Linux kernel community is likely to gain a few more contributors

Which audience segment is your talk/session going to beneficial for?

  • Open Source Contributors
