Designing great UIs - A practitioner's approach

The aim of the lecture is to explain how to design great looking web applications and websites and how to make sense of the vast array of technologies/tools available to pick the right tool. Also details how different tools employ Ajax/Javascript to achieve good interaction. How user interface design differs between J2EE web applications and PHP/Ajax websites.

Outline

The session will explain good user interface design from a practitioner’s approach and contain screenshots/videos of stuff the presenter has been working on for past 8 years. Designing for both Java web application and a PHP website will be discussed. Various Rich internet application frameworks like GWT, IceFaces, JSF, Smart GWT, Wicket, Echo and how to pick what’s right for your application will be discussed. Designing great websites using PHP’s Joomla content management system will be briefly discussed.

Requirements

A paper and pen or pencil to take notes will do.

Speaker bio

Omprakash Visvanathan, 40 years old, is a product designer and entrepreneur living in Chennai. He has worked with India and in the USA with several large companies including IBM, MCI, Covansys, IGate and Polaris. He has an M.S in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He has developed other products including the Aatma XML IDE and XSLT debugger and the Raptor XML Rules engine. In his spare time, he is an avid reader, likes singing and dancing and social media.
