HTAP: bridging OLTP and OLAP

Submitted Jun 19, 2025

Problem statement

Today’s engineering teams don’t just build applications; they also need to deeply understand user behavior and align products with evolving sentiments. Traditional database systems often force a difficult choice: optimize for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), ideal for rapid, individual operations, or for Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), designed for complex, aggregate queries. This often leads to fragmented data architectures and operational complexity. Modern databases, however, are bridging this gap with Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) capabilities, offering a unified solution.

Discussion

In this talk, we’ll dive into:

  • Understanding HTAP: What it is, why it’s a game-changer, and how it addresses the limitations of traditional OLTP and OLAP systems.
  • TiDB’s Architecture: A concise overview of how TiDB is architected to deliver HTAP, highlighting its key components.
  • HTAP in Action: We’ll demystify how TiDB seamlessly supports both OLTP and OLAP workloads within a single system.
  • Intelligent Workload Management: Discover how TiDB intelligently distinguishes between and optimizes for OLTP and OLAP queries.
  • Recorded Demonstration: See HTAP in action with a recorded demo showcasing its capabilities.
  • Performance or Resilience: We’ll discuss performance characteristics or explore how TiDB handles failure recovery, ensuring data consistency and availability.

Takeaways

  • A clear understanding of the HTAP paradigm and how modern databases are solving the challenges of integrated transactional and analytical workloads.
  • Insights into how HTAP can simplify your data architecture, eliminating the need for complex, siloed OLTP and OLAP systems.
