Hiring for AI Roles - PhDs or Undergrads?

Submitted Oct 5, 2023

AI is no stranger to anyone out there. Often dubbed as one of the most disruptive technologies in 21st century - AI has keen interest from every business leader out there.

A key component of getting AI right in an organization is getting the right AI talent. In Valley - most AI scientists are PhDs. In India, most AI teams have only undergrads! This stark difference warrants a deeper investigation - why are US companies hiring PhDs? Have Indian companies discovered a secret formula that they are able to get done similar work from undergrads? Does one have an advantage over the other?

In this talk, we will go down this rabbit hole and try n bring out deeper insights on hiring PhDs or Undergrads for AI roles.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Advantages & disadvantages of hiring each of Udergrads & PhDs
  2. Is this even a this vs that question?
  3. What is the right way forward?
  4. We show that the best way is Undergrads and PhDs, not Undergrads vs PhDs
