Bangalore Systems Meetup #3

📣 The third Bengaluru Systems meet-up on 28 September 2024 was houseful with 200+ participants

Amod Malviya - founder at Udaan; former CTO at Flipkart - spoke about boundaries between hardware and software. Participants got an insight or two about CPU and GPU processing pipelines - why one might be slower than the other - along with useful book recommendations.

Computer Architecture via Code

Participants thoroughly enjoyed Amod’s talk. There was a free flowing discussion and quite a few gotchas when discussing the expected results.

The second talk was by Srinivas Devaki on hard-won wisdom about caching, and experiences with caching systems deployed at Zomato-scale. Caching is one of the harder problems to solve. Srinivas’s talk also exposed participants to the complexities and challenges which require careful consideration when deciding on caching systems, and quirks involved in working with them.

Caching Systems

Srinivas’s talk had some cool pop culture references thrown in for good measure! The talk was also highly interactive.

👏 Participant testimonials 👏

“Amod’s talk was excellent - well structured, insightful and engaging. Programming in a high level language like Python makes one productive while also being comfortably oblivious to the granular details of how code executes on the hardware. Amod’s talk was particularly interesting to me because it made me confront my ignorance.”
- Anuvrat Parashar, Co-founder at Essentia.dev

“As a general systems meetup, the presentations primarily focused on the language-agnostic software dimension. Amod’s presentation was particularly well-structured and delivered with great clarity. The audience was fully engaged throughout the presentation; it was evident that the attendees were highly knowledgeable and experienced in the field. To date, all the Bengaluru Systems meetups have been both informative and impactful.”
- Kashyap Kondamudi, Flipkart

“Both the talks were equally brilliant. The first one was quite interactive as it was a pop-quiz type of thing. The second one was more detailed and dived very deep into a caching. The audience turnout was very good and they were very interactive. After the meetup I realized that some of the intuitions I have around computers and CPU and caches are not correct, and that I need to read up. The overall experience was stellar.”
- Sohom Bhattacharjee, SRE at Last9

“The Bangalore System Meetup was fun. Amod has a knack for simplifying hard concepts by encouraging us to think and reason about them. Both speakers highlighted how far removed we are from hardware and why understanding computer internals is important. I had a blast chatting and debating with old and new friends in the audience.”
- Sachin D, founder at TrojanVectors

🎬 Speaker testimonials 🎬

“BlrSys has been an amazing community so far. The talks have always been high quality, and the community has maintained a high bar of conversations.”
- Amod Malviya, Udaan

“I had the pleasure of speaking at BlrSys Meetup #3. The event’s flawless organization was truly impressive. The team was incredibly proactive, ensuring I was well-informed about all logistics. Their attention to detail stood out - from arriving early to verify technical setups to ensuring slide visibility from every corner of the room. The level of care extended to checking HDMI connections and testing any slide resources, including audio, in advance. This exceptional coordination created one of the smoothest experiences that I had till now.”
- Srinivas Devaki, founder at OptiOwl
