Did you know that psychological principles developed over a century ago still shape modern graphic design and visual communication? The way we perceive patterns, group elements, and focus our attention is deeply rooted in human cognition—and understanding these principles can transform the way we communicate through data visualizations.
In this session, we’ll delve into the science of perception-based design concepts and the art of creating impactful charts, graphs, and infographics. Through real-world examples of data visualisations, we’ll explore how simple design choices can enhance clarity, guide the viewer’s eye, and improve storytelling with data.
Attendees will learn how to make informed design choices that draw the viewers’ attention and enhance communication in visuals. Whether you’re designing dashboards, reports, or presentations, these insights will help you create visuals that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also intuitive, effective, and impactful.
Beyond improving your own visualizations, you’ll also gain the skills to offer better critiques and feedback—whether for your team, clients, or peers. By the end of the session, you’ll see data visualization in a new light and walk away with practical techniques to apply immediately in your work.
Anybody who designs visuals for communication and dissemination of information, especially data visualisations and infographics — the likes of information designers, journalists, and data analysts.
The lessons from this session will also benefit people who work with them including but not limited to editors, educators, and marketing managers.
