Democratizing financial data for a growing India

Submitted Apr 11, 2025

{Describe your talk/session in 2-3 paragraphs}
Retail holdings as direct and indirect investors (through mutual funds) surged more than 10 times over the last 10 years, according to data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). In a country of 320 million households, we now have 110 million unique investors.

With this surge in the number of retail investors, the need to serve them the right information to base their investment decisions on is the need of the hour. The challenge for this demographic is that financial data is usually full of jargon, dense tables and complex charts - which they struggle to make sense of due to low financial literacy. And so, we set out to explore the question - what if people don’t need more information, but clearer explanations?

With that we set out to build Groww Stories.

This talk will cover our journey in helping build Groww stories - a feature on the app designed to bring financial literacy to India’s growing segment of first time retail investors. It brings financial stories and data to life in a way that’s fun, engaging, and easy to understand while staying true to current events.

We’ll explore how this feature was conceptualized and built out iteratively. With each story having a <4 hour turnaround time, the design language was built on the fly with daily evolutions being the norm. Under the stories banner, we’ve worked on representing financial events in the context of present day and the past along with visualizing quarterly reports released by public companies.

{Mention 1-2 takeaways from your session}
• Simplified data for Financial Literacy
Attendees will see how clarity trumps complexity in the world of financial communication—especially for first-time investors. The audience will reflect on the notion that the key to financial awareness might not be more data, but better design.

• Visualizing Complex Financial Events
Through specific stories—like budget announcements, IPOs, or quarterly results—we’ll walk through how we contextualized data and turned complex financial information into accessible stories. We’ll also show how simple but appealing visuals improve engagement which in turn moves the needle on the value the viewer derives from each story.

• The Role of Designers in Bridging Gaps
This talk emphasizes the social responsibility of design—how designers can play a critical role in democratizing access to knowledge and empowering everyday people through clear, intentional communication.

{Who is the audience for your talk/session?}
• The talk is well suited for the ones who are interested in data visualisations at scale, designers, PMs, Devs, anyone who’s into financial data and the stock market, and the ones who are keen on improving access to information for large audiences.
