Story of the popular multi script Typeface "Annai" The popular Tamil type called 'Inaimathi' which continues to render Tamil text beautifully on iPhones, iPads, HTC Android devices and even the Apple Watches.
Renowned Type designer and font enginnering expert, Mr. Muthu Nedumaran will share stories about how he fell in love with type even before he learnt the word typeface or font. He will highlight some of the interesting milestones in his typographic journey. He will share his latest work that combines his ability to design and engineer complex typefaces that pushes the limit of the underlying technologies for Indian font rendering.
About the speaker: Muthu Nedumaran has over 3 decades of experience in designing typefaces for complex scripts. He started out by drawing large banners and posters with Tamil and Latin inscriptions while he was at school in the 70s. His initial work in the digital space were bit mapped fonts for the computer screen and printers with a dot-matrix print-head. In the 80s, he developed bitmapped fonts for laser printers. This, together with his simplified input method for the Tamil script, changed the entire landscape of Tamil printing in Malaysia and Singapore. Daily newspapers, magazines and books abandoned conventional letter press for his digital typefaces. His simple end-to-end system also enabled many new publications to spring up as it drastically reduced the need for heavy upfront investment.

About the Typography Society of India (TSI): TSI was set up by Prof. G V Sreekumar and a group of Typography and Calligraphy enthusiasts. He is a Professor and former Head of IDC school of Design at IIT Bombay. The main objective of this group is to provide a platform for interaction and to share knowledge on Calligraphy, Typography etc with design students, profesionals and academicians. TSI’s core group includes Prof. Tarundeep Girdher (NID Ahmedabad), Dr. D. Udayakumar (Dept of Design, IIT Guwahati and Designer of the Indian Rupee Sign) and Chirag Gander (CEO, The Minimalist). TSI started off as a small WhatsApp group for typography enthusiasts.
