Case Study: Handling Multi DC constructs with Apache HBase

Submitted Oct 18, 2024

Apache HBase is an open-source non-relational distributed database modeled after Google’s Bigtable and written in Java. It is developed as part of Apache Software Foundation’s Apache Hadoop project and runs on top of HDFS, providing Bigtable-like capabilities for Hadoop.

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery is a necessity for every organization. One aspect of it is to make their backend systems available in more than one Region / Data Center. At Flipkart, we have our infrastructure available across multiple Regions and here is a case study on how we architected our multi region constructs with a case study of Apache HBase as a data store.

This talk will be covering aspects around building constructs that enable databases to be deployed across multiple DC’s.

Key Takeaways:

  • What does it take to have database made available across multiple regions / zones
  • Nuances around design choices that the datastore has made affecting multi dc deployment
  • How to build application client library for a datastore deployed across multiple DC’s

Audience:

  • Software engineer curious to understand how to build applications which has dependency on a datastore deployed across DC’s
  • Startup founders who are interested in understanding how large companies like flipkart handle multi dc constructs around their databases
