Beyond CI/CD: Building Platforms for complex engineering setups

Submitted Oct 29, 2024

Abstract

Remember when every team had their own CI/CD pipeline. Every CI/CD pipeline becomes a distributed monolith - a tangle of Jenkins jobs, GitHub Actions, and custom scripts that only the original team understands.

As Head Of Engineering of a Platform Engineering Company, I’ve seen huge enterprises and hypergrowth startups(MPL, Purplle, Vymo) shift their fragmented pipelines into unified platforms where deployment is no longer an engineering bottleneck.

The Platform Transformation

Here’s what the focus of the talk would be around:

  1. How we turned fragmented CI/CD setups into unified platform experiences that engineering leaders actually trust
  2. Building self-service platforms that scale from 10 to 1000 developers without breaking DevOps
  3. Battle tested strategy for shifting from pipeline management to platform engineering without disrupting teams

Key Takeaways

  • Proven patterns for consolidating distributed CI/CD into unified platforms that actually deliver
  • Platform engineering strategies that work across enterprise compliance and startup speed
  • Real metrics and architectural decisions that enabled successful platform adoption across diverse engineering cultures

Target Audience

  1. Engineering Leaders navigating broken pipelines across teams
  2. DevOps, SREs and Platform Engineers
  3. CTOs and VPs of Engineering planning their platform transformation journey
