Submitted Oct 4, 2018

Developers get a bad rep when it comes to design. When something looks ugly, people say it’s designed by a developer :P
Unlike art, design can be learned and implemented with simple rules. Let’s look at some design theory along with easy practical tips that you can use to make your web pages and applications prettier ✨

Outline

Talk summary: https://youtu.be/9LcMPkTB_os

Intented takeaway: Learn a bit of design theory so that you can discuss designers with your developers in more detail + take home some tips (almost cheat codes) that you can start applying to your web pages to make them instantly look better.

  1. Start with why: Design is not about aesthetics, design is about consumption
  2. Information architecture
  3. Spacing: whitespace + use the 8pt grid
  4. Typography: what’s the difference b/w sans and sans-serif. font pairing + line-height
  5. Colors: color theory: psychological implication of color + contrast + accents
