Tracking the real estate mafia using OpenStreetMap

Submitted Oct 1, 2026

OpenStreetMap is often described as the Wikipedia of maps. What does that mean in practice?

Using the example of the real estate mafia, this talk breaks down how OpenStreetMap can be used to track them. Starting from how data enters the map, then going into what the data looks like, and eventually where the data gets used, all in the context of OpenStreetMap.

Since data doesn’t get created out of a vaccuum, a good chunk of this story will be about the government portals and processes through which the real estate mafia leak their data.

With the real estate mafia story as an example of how OpenStreetMap can work, we’ll also see other ways in which OpenStreetMap is already being used by everyone everywhere everyday.
