The Tao of Compiler Engineering

Submitted Apr 10, 2026

Compiler Engineering is one of the strangest subfields of Computer Science. Close to hardware but not quite, deeply rooted in theory but also constrained by practical tradeoffs. Its a field where academics and engineers contribute equally to solving for two problems : Making code compile correctly and run as fast as possible.

In this session the speaker will draw from their own experience of working with organizations such as Arduino, FSF/GNU, Intel Mobileye and AMD, and how it lead them to Compiler Engineering. We go over the problems that Compiler developers work on, the challenges they face, and surprising areas where compiler technology has a huge impact. We end with examples of some very interesting things that modern day optimizing compilers do, and with advice on how the audience can get started with compiler development.

Speaker Bio :

Ashutosh Pandey is a Senior Compiler Engineer working with the AMD AOCC team. He organizes the IICT Workshop, LLVM Social Bangalore meetup and can be found at Hackathons in and around the city.
