In an era where data is the new currency, privacy is under constant attack from mass surveillance, invasive advertising, and corporate overreach. Privacy-preserving technologies (PPTs) offer a way to reclaim control, enabling users to communicate, browse, and transact securely. But how do these technologies work, and why is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) crucial to their success?
This talk will provide a beginner-friendly introduction to PPTs, covering concepts like end-to-end encryption, decentralized networks, zero-knowledge proofs, privacy-focused operating systems, and anonymity networks (Tor, I2P, Nym). We will explore real-world tools such as Signal, Tails OS, Monero, and ProtonMail, demonstrating how they protect user privacy.
Additionally, we will discuss why proprietary solutions often fail to prioritize user privacy, how corporations exploit data, and why FOSS is inherently aligned with privacy principles. Attendees will leave with actionable steps to enhance their privacy, contribute to privacy-focused FOSS projects, and advocate for a more secure digital world.
Developers, security researchers, FOSS enthusiasts, activists, journalists, and anyone concerned about digital rights, privacy, and online security.
