Abstract

Tech giants like Apple (VisionPro), Meta (Orion), and Google (Android XR) are rapidly advancing immersive Augmented Reality (AR) through the integration of artificial intelligence, enabling a new wave of intelligent, context aware head-mounted devices (HMD) and new age context aware apps.

What began as a casual interest in VR gaming led me to explore how AI brings spatial intelligence to AR which allows systems to perceive, understand, and respond to the physical world. Real immersion demands more than rendering; it requires real-time environmental awareness that’s where AI comes into play.

In this session, we’ll explore how AI enables AR apps to “see” and interpret user surroundings in real time. We’ll break down the foundational concepts of AI for Augmented Reality which is a domain that is different in some ways from traditional computer vision applications.

We’ll also start with a brief introduction to AR fundamentals, making this talk accessible to those new to the space.

Motivation

A new class of personal devices is emerging in the form of AR glasses, which have the potential to succeed smartphones as the next generation of personal digital assistants.

This shift is being powered by rapid advancements in AI particularly in speech, vision, and language capabilities. If speech is the next evolution of user interface, then AR glasses could well be the next evolution of smart phones.

I’m genuinely excited to witness and be part of this evolution. Now is the perfect time to dive into the foundations and future of this transformative field.
