Building Quality APIs for Quality Apps
Submitted by Minni Arora (@minniarora) on Friday, 5 August 2016
Section: Full talk (40 minutes) Technical level: Intermediate Status: Rejected
Behind all mobile apps are APIs. Right from logging in to the app to searching, buying or playing games, everthing is powered by APIs. Building quality APIs is important, both for apps as well as API providers. A bad API means integration hassles, re-iterations, higer defect rates and longer development cycles.
The success of an app depends greatly upon the performance and correctness of APIs. Mobile is a world of limitations with constraints on bandwidth, battery and cpu. But there are ways in which APIs can be optimized for mobile consumption by implementing methods like aggregation, resource expansion, data on demand etc…
In this session, we will share our experiences and discuss problems that arise from bad API design, the challenges, best practices and tools in designing effective APIs that are easy to use, have well defined interfaces and are well documented. We will also look at techniques and methods to optimize APIs for mobile apps.
- The rise of APIs
- Ingredients of a Successful API
- Design principles for APIs
- Optimizing APIs for mobile
- Manage APIs through versions, policies and contracts
- Documenting APIs with Swagger
- API Security
- The Success metrics
