COEP FOSSMeet’19 is College of Engineering, Pune’s own Free and Open Source Software event. It is jointly organised by Computer and IT department, COEP, COEP’s Free Software Users Group (COFSUG) and COEP’s - Information and Cyber Security Research Group (COEP - ICSRG).

With a vision to promote the culture of openness, innovation, and freedom, the meet intends to bring together FOSS developers, academicians, researchers, students and all those who love the FOSS movement and provide an opportunity to all technophiles out there to participate in the FOSS development and adoption process through hands-on sessions, discussions and lectures.

Neighbourhood Mapping Using Open Source Tools: A Koorachundu Village Panchayath experience

Importance of mapping Neighbourhood mapping. Role of the local community, government and individual in map making. Why is it required to have open Map data. Mapping of our neighbourhoods with open source tools and Openstreet Map. Sharing community efforts taken at Koorachundu Village Panchayath for mapping the amenities, utilities and the assets. A small introduction on how to map the neighbourhood. Time needed : 45min.

  1. A lineage/android mobile phone installed with OSM Tracker,GPS logger, Keypad Mapper
  2. Laptop installed with josm and Java run time environment
  3. Openstreet map account

Speaker bio

I am Arjun Gangadharan (ark Arjun), a civil engineer interested in Urban planning, mapping, GIS and geospatial sciences. Currently pursuing Masters from Symbiosis International University in Geoinformatics. I was part of technical team for Koorachundu Mapping Exercise 2015 and 2018. Volunteer in many FOSS activities and organisations like Openstreet map, wikipedia, Swathanthra Malayalam Computing (smc.org.in) etc. and FOSS and open data Enthusiast. I am the co-founder and Cheif Geospatial Engineer of Geominds(geominds.in).
