I present a broad exploration of the use of data in a variety of design contexts, codify them into their thematic essential, and derive a set of vocabularies reflective of the new compulsions that design will have to embrace in this data intensive world. These vocabularies, taxonomically presented, are intended to both enhance the role of design as well as provide a direction for its future dveelopment.
The presentation will be highly visual (gleaned from the aforesaid examples), quick paced, and conversational in tone.
The talk hopes to provide both a spectacle (via interesting examples) and a provocation for reflection. The final taxonomy presented can serve as a framework for expanding on the idea of quantites as a design element.
Anyone interested in the convergent space between design and data, pedagogues, practitioners.
Sudhakar Damodaraswamy teaches at the School of Design and Innovation, R. V. University, Bengaluru, where he is a Professor of Practice, and the program director of Transdisciplinary Design
As a 30-year expert in the area of user experience design, he loves to evangelize the use of design principles, learning by intense exploration, and seeking of value as the end goal of design.
His research interests include the role of culture in design and pedagogical refinements in design education, and a current in-school initiative to develop an approach for transdisciplinary design contexts. He has developed a number of frameworks that attempt to enhance the idea of design and its role in the world.
He likes to read a lot, grow green things, and dive down the exploratory rabbit hole of whatever is new in technology.
