'First Impressions' - Notes from a short course designed on fundamentals of Data Viz

Submitted Apr 15, 2025

(Context)

  • I recently designed and taught a short course introducing Data Visualization to young undergraduate students at the Faculty of Design, CEPT University, India. This was the first time students would be exposed to the ideas of Data Visualization however as a fundamental core skill for their future. Given the short duration of the course the challenge was to execute this course without using any digital tools, as a completely hands-on activity drawing by hand.
    In this talk, I intend to present how the short course was designed, sharing the history of data visualization, its critical importance for designers (which may also be relevant to non-designers!), how the series of hands-on exercises were curated and finally a core framework that encouraged students to think beyond graphs and charts and make a meaningful representation of data. (Disclaimer - This talk doesn’t include any direct use of digital tools/method for Data Viz however the strategies discussed may be applicable in digital, big data realms too.)

{Mention 1-2 takeaways from your session}

  • Reflection on how to teach Data Visualisation to young Design Students who did not have that skill before
  • Strategies to practice Data Vizulisation beyond technical formats (like graphs and charts)
  • Few framework/strategies that can be introduced to young students/practitioners)

{Who is the audience for your talk/session?}

  • Broadly any Data Viz practitioner however more specifically any one who teaches data visualization, visual design, information design
  • and New practitioners of Data Visualisation

{Add your bio, including work place name and your job role}
