The Dangers of a Data Republic

What are the differences between public, private data?

Talk: The Dangers of a Data Republic.
April 20, 2020 - 7:30 PM
Duration: Talk 30 minutes, Q&A 10 minutes.

By Srinivas Kodali, an independent researcher working on data and internet.

The Economic Survey of 2019’s proposal for the government is to sell citizen data to private sector, treating data as public good, without defining ownership of data.

There, India’s Chief Economic Advisor Krishnamurthy Subramanian devotes a whole chapter to this, asserting data in India needs to be treated as public good.

While the economic benefit of monetising and using public data cannot be ignored, India’s current approach towards this is better expressed by ‘Data of the people, by the Government, for the corporates’.
