🛠️ About Technical Reviews 🛠️

Previously, technical reviews were held as part of content curation for Rootconf and The Fifth Elephant conferences.

🚣🚣🚣 Starting 2025, technical reviews will be held as a weekly basis. Here’s how review works:

  • All submissions made here will be reviewed by (practitising) reviewers via online meetings.
  • Two technical reviewers will participate in each review. They will provide feedback on:
    • Whether the solution/approach has worked for the organization;
    • If there is an element of novelty in the work shared (optional); and
    • Validity of the idea/approach.
  • A text summary of the feedback shared during the review will be published after every review.

About the review

Any long running infrastructure in production, reaches its constraints over time. It requires a timely migration to avoid getting into the vicious cycle of tech debt, where upgrading a system evokes fear and reinforces the belief that change is futile. Transitioning the core infrastructure of such a service necessitates a careful, low-risk approach that ensures continuous service health and no interruptions. It can be an intimidating process.

Serverless infrastructures are big in reducing ops and lowering costs. But it comes with a lack of flexibility to debug. Priya Ananthasankar will focus on how to structure the migration of services that is migrating from its own legacy to depend on a serverless infrastructure and a methodology (charting the course, blazing a path, designing a compass and completing the expedition).

Key Highlights

Chart the Course: Control A/B Experiments
How do you roll the dice to prep for the migration

Blaze a path: Planning the rollout
How to plan the path ahead?

Design a Compass: What can one measure to ensure the migration is proceeding well?
What are some interesting metrics, one can monitor and look out for? Are there simple measurements at certain granular levels that can help build a solid dashboard, that can serve as a compass?

Complete the journey: When to call the migration complete?
What can one measure to call the service migration complete?

Key takeaways

If any cloud engineer or SRE is embarking on a cloud migration task, even within a cloud native environment, this approach will provide a structure and methodology to migrating distributed systems infrastructure, with some guidance and mindfulness into what to monitor and watch out for.

Who will benefit

  • Cloud/SRE/DevOps Engineers of any level.
  • Managers or team leads or architects looking to migrate their service backend

📼📼 Participation in technical reviews 📼📼

Participation in technical reviews is open to Rootconf and Fifthel members. Memberships help support review activity. Members also get to participate in the in-person events curated from Rootconf and Fifthel technical reviews.
