Introduction

Ente (“mine” in Malayalam) is a Free and Open Source, E2EE, Privacy first (we mean it when we say it), alternative to Google Photos. The heart of Ente is Museum - the server program built in Golang which does everything to save your photos from the Big Tech.

In this talk, I will focus on explaining the following things:

1. A quick run through what is Self-hosting
2. How to self-host Ente, what are the problems in self-hosting it and how do you tackle those problems.
3. I will majorly focus on talking about more technical aspects on why there are complications at certain bits and pieces in the process right now. As we also let self-hosters decide on a lot of things like their S3 provider while not restricting them to something the company/project prefers.
4. Why you should self-host and self preserve your photos and how it is better in the longer run.

I will also like to cover the privacy aspect by showing one of Ente’s Weekend project They see your photos and how Big Tech is continously monitoring a person’s surrounding (location), emotions and data with the Help of AI. Would really love to see people from the data privacy policy aspect to turn up and provide broader perspectives on this.

About the Speaker

Hello, I’m Mangesh. I am a 2nd year B.Tech Student from Solapur, MH. I joined Ente 3 months ago as an engineer and technical support majorly for the self-hosting community, previously worked for FOSS United Foundation for a period of a 1 year contributing bits and pieces to the website, self-hosting OSS and community.
