A community of makers, builders and practitioners in Open Source AI

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is widely seen as a critical area of innovation and progress.

However, creating an effective ecosystem for inclusive and responsible AI technologies requires a healthy and supportive ecosystem. This is even more important in geographies like India, where the benefits of access to technology often eludes a large number of citizens.

The Open Source AI Community – which grew out of The Fifth Elephant’s Open Source AI hackathon – is aimed at creating a space for open source AI enthusiasts, builders and practitioners. Together, we hope to discuss, share and collaborate towards building more open, equitable and responsible solutions and products.

If you are passionate about open source in AI, join us in building a stronger ecosystem for artificial intelligence in India.

Why does Open Source AI need a new community?

  1. A community for itself (to discuss interests, ideas and passion), by itself (where members operate and abide by guidelines of the community) and of itself (where members bring in resources such as mentors and friends and colleagues to enrich the community’s membership and conversations). This community is not driven by corporate agendas.
  2. To discover, support and promote interesting projects and ideas leveraging open source AI.
  3. To deep dive into practitioner insights and case studies on how open source AI is being implemented in different domains and for solving different problems at hand.
  4. For peer review of emerging tools and technologies around open source AI.
  5. To understand and navigate the labyrinths of government and global regulations, licenses and uncertainty around open source AI.
  6. To build a gender diverse community, and where open source projects can be made financially sustainable, with a growing pool of contributors and volunteers.

In general, our objective is to respond to the evolving needs of the open source AI building community by giving it a voice and aggregating resources (mentors, volunteers, compute, financial resources and social capital).
