Meta Refresh 2016

On the narratives behind products

Theme

This year’s Meta Refresh is different.

Meta Refresh has traditionally been about the “how” of building a product’s interface, and we’ve been intimately concerned with how HTML, CSS and JavaScript get in a three-way tango to bring UI to life.

This year, we want you to step back and reflect. The process of ideation, detailing and validation of an idea before it becomes a product hasn’t received sufficient attention. We also want to re-visit that magical word “pivot” and humanize it a bit: why, how and what did you do to make your product work? That’s the essence of the new Meta Refresh.

Let’s set aside the technical detail and look at product and interaction design. Let’s question what “product” means at all. Is it just an app or website, or is it something larger in your user’s mind, something where the app or website are just one of many interaction points? Do you have a product that has no app or website at all, relying entirely on publically available resources? (That would be one fantastic story.)

This Meta Refresh, share the narrative behind your product, the gaps you connected, and the thought process behind them.

Format

This year’s edition spans two days of conference and workshops. We are inviting proposals for:

  • Full-length 40 minute talks.
  • Crisp 15-minute talks.
  • Hands-on Workshop sessions, 3 and 6 hour duration, on topics such as prototyping, interaction design and UI design.

Selection process

Proposals will be filtered and shortlisted by an Editorial Panel. You must add links to videos / slide decks when submitting proposals. This will help us understand your past speaking experience.

We expect you to submit an outline of your proposed talk: either in the form of a mind map or a text document or draft slides when you submit your proposal.

Selected speakers must participate in one or two rounds of rehearsals with a test audience before the conference. This is mandatory and helps you to prepare well for the conference.

There is only one speaker per session. Entry is free for speakers listed on the schedule. As our budget is limited, we will prefer speakers from locations closer home, but will do our best to cover for anyone exceptional. HasGeek will provide a grant to cover part of your travel and accommodation in Bangalore. Grants are limited and made available to speakers delivering full sessions (40 minutes or longer).

Key dates and deadlines

  • Paper submission deadline: 15 April
  • Schedule announcement: 25 April
  • Conference dates: 13-14 May

Venue

Meta Refresh will be held at the MLR Convention Centre, J P Nagar.
