Most of us must might have used Wikipedia at any one point in our lives. But have you ever wondered who is behind the wiki pages and who manages the backend code of the webpages? This talk will introduce you to the world of Open Source through the Wikimedia Foundation. Get exposed to the workflow of the Wikimedia Foundation, the developer community, and MediaWiki that power projects like the Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wiktionary.

Having one of the largest communities with tons of contributors, Wikimedia Foundation serves as the perfect place to get started with your first contribution to an Open Source organization.

The freedom and flexibility that a person can have in an Open Source community is magnificent. The audience would find this talk helpful for the better understanding of Open source organizations through Wikimedia and make them a better Wikipedians. This also helps the Outreachy/Google Summer of Code aspirants.

Outline

  • What is Wikimedia Foundation?

    The audience will get a better insight of how Wikimedia Foundation works, it’s various technologies and  the backend aspiration of the organization as well.
    
  • Wikimedia Bug tracker and Code Review System.

     An overview of the Wikimedia bug tracker Phabricator and the Gerrit Code review System. 
    
  • Wikipedia, Wikimedia and Mediawiki ?

    Discussing the various contrasting contents of the Wikimedia, Wikipedia, and MediaWiki and what they really are.
    
  • What are wiki talk pages?

     The effective use of talk pages,a few conventions and etiquettes to be followed including how to edit wiki pages.
    
  • How Wikimedia serving the world?

     Enlisting the initiatives of Wikimedia and the commitment of the Wikimedia Foundation to the society.
    
  • Freedom in an Open Source Community.

     Community relations and collaborations being vital, hence a quick overview of its significance.
    
  • Mediawiki Extension: RevisionSlider and its usage.

    Demonstrating the benefits of MediaWiki most important Extension, the RevisionSlider
    

Requirements

No prerequisite required. All the open source enthusiasts are welcomed !

Speaker bio

Gopa Vasanth, a sophomore in CSE at Amrita University, he is an open source enthusiast and an active member of FOSS@Amrita. He has been actively contributing to Wikimedia organisation from the past 57 weeks. He had fixed good many issues and few wikimedia technical projects like the RevisionSlider, A slider that adds a good interface to the diff view so that everyone can easily move between revisions to track them. He had also mentored several students in Google Code-In 2018 with Wikimedia Organisation.
