Call for Proposals: Open Source AI in Production

The recent requests by the Indian government to avoid gold imports highlight how vulnerable India is to its dependence on U.S. dollars for imports. We already depend on other countries for oil and gold. Can we afford to also increase our dependence on foreign models? NVIDIA recently announced RTX Spark, a one-of-a-kind reinvention of the Windows laptop that supports 120B parameter local model inference. Is the future local?

The Fifth Elephant is looking for practitioners who’ve rolled up their sleeves with open source AI models and have the stories to prove it.

If you’ve run inference with an open weight model on a tight budget, or fine-tuned an open variant for a real use case — if you have experience with Indian language models and can testify to their behaviour in production — we want to hear from you.

What we’re looking for

  • Talks grounded in hands-on experience, not slides lifted from a model’s launch post
  • Honest takes: what worked, what didn’t, and what you’d do differently
  • Any domain — healthcare, legal, code generation, regional languages, enterprise search — it doesn’t matter

Format: 30-minute talk + 10 minutes Q&A

You don’t need to be an ML researcher. If you’re an engineer, data scientist, or technical founder who’s shipped something using open weight models, your experience is exactly what this audience wants.

Timeline

  • Submission deadline: 10 AM, 30th June 2026
  • Notification of selection: 4th July 2026

How to submit

  1. Submit your abstract. Your abstract should clearly describe:

    • the problem or topic being addressed,
    • why it is relevant,
    • who the session is intended for, and
    • the key takeaways attendees can expect.
  2. Add a link to draft slides within 3–5 days - after submitting your abstract, add a link to the draft version of your slides within 3–5 days. Draft slides help editors better evaluate the structure, depth, and delivery of the session.
Submissions without draft slides may not be reviewed or may experience delays in receiving feedback.
