GeoCommons and TileMill: Stories through maps.

Submitted Sep 13, 2012

Introduce two major web mapping tools - GeoCommons.com and TileMill. Equip the participants to mashup interesting data to make quick maps and render custom maps using OpenStreetMap data.

Outline

GeoCommons.com is an online maps mashup application where anyone can upload datasets and create maps quickly. TileMill is a map design studio which uses the map styling language called Carto. Both of them are important tools to tell stories through maps. The workshop will be a hands-on tour of both these tools while we play around with few datasets to make beautiful maps.

Requirements

Fair understanding of data formats like GPX, KML and CSV. Understanding of CSS will be a super bonus to pick up TileMill.
