Data tells us stories about the world. When data is missing, is misrepresented, or is false, it advertently shapes the way we engage with those around us. Data available for open content sharing online, currently lacks diversity in representation of people, places, and things.
The proposed talk hopes to make visible the inherent biases embedded in the technology we use today, and makes the case for diversifying to debias datasets that are permeating all sectors today. Bias intersects with the technical and social aspects of data. How data is captured, labelled, curated, communicated and disseminated influences how we shop, romance, bank, and other such everyday acts.
Takeaways:
We have pioneered a 7-step approach to debiasing data which is an innovative and unique approach that bridges the humanities and technology for more targeted and relevant results.
The audience with their exposure to diverse datasets and labelling exercises will be able to get an insight into the subjective nature of technology and the power to change it through this debiasing data method
This workshop invites stakeholders which includes coders, developers, engineers, policy enthusiasts, writers, researchers, designers and users to realise the extent and need to debias data.
