Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship related track of The Goa Project 2016

This year (2016) The Goa Project features a separate track on Entrepreneurship.

Any form of Entrepreneurship is not easy. But there are specific sectors that are more challenging than the others. If you are trying to build a sustainable organization in a difficult and / or unglamorous market, this is a great opportunity to show case it to the world. Please come and share your success stories, failures, learnings and experiences.

Some examples (but not limited to) are:

  1. Creative entrepreneurs in design / performing arts / social impact space

  2. Consumer facing business that is self-sustainable and profitable

  3. Sectors like infrastructure, waste management, renewable energy, engineering, agri-food..

  4. The tragedy of the commons

  5. Useful technologies that require behavioural change / have poor adoption curves..

  6. Developing markets outside India

  7. Difficult to monetize sectors such as music or entertainment

  8. Any thing else and more..

The emphasis is not really on the sector or even the problem-opportunity-solution. Tell us how you are cracking the challenges of adoption, sustainability and scalability. Even if it is Work in Progress, there is a lot we can all learn from you.

The Dark Night Rises - entrepreneurship's dark corners, what few speak about.

Submitted Jan 9, 2016

While failure in business has now become a badge of honour, thanks to a more westernised way of looking at business and personal successes as two different aspects, the immense toll that failure takes on health, finances, relations and the phsyce of an individual is something that entrepreneurs can ignore only to their own peril.
The objective of this talk is to bring out these issues in the open, get discussion going on how to deal with them, and if possible, have an outcome of creating a small band of dedicated “do-gooders” who will champion this cause in their start-up eco-systems.

Outline

Failure and the related loss of self esteem and confidence, fractured or broken relatinships, hostility within the family, inability to share and learn from peers and mentors, these are all things which entrepreneurs go through.
Few, if ever talk about it.
The session will be a combinatinon of talk, followed by Q and A and a discussion within the attendees.

Requirements

Nothing physical. Notebooks, pens and mobile phones are better left in their backpacks.
An open mind and heart, a wilingness so share a few ‘sob-stories’ and ‘deep-dark-secrets’ of their own experiences will be helpful.
A projector with a handheld laser pointer is needed.

Speaker bio

I, Rajiv Lulla am the founder and ceo of Capricorn Gifting, and angel funded b2b company in the space of corporate gifting and promotional merchandise.
A downnturn in business lead to bankrupcy in 2010, during which I had to sell my house to clear debts and try and start afresh. While the financial debt was cleared, the ‘failure’ effected almost everything I had, self esteem and confidence (I could not buy a pair of spectacles without agonising over it for a week, my belief in my own decision making capability had hit rock bottom), relationships with family (guilit of taking the home down with me + the hostility & lack of respect I noticed or perceived?).
I was lucky at this time, to have the unstinting support of my father and a friend who very soon became my mentor and biggest cheerleader. Without them, I would not have been able to come out of this.
I hope to be able to put forth pitfalls & how to get over them, by changing nothing but our thought process and our own personal inner narrative.
