BoF: The State of Rust Hiring - Signals, Skills, and Scarcity

Submitted Apr 14, 2026

Proposal:

Hiring Rust engineers is uniquely challenging due to the language’s steep learning curve and evolving ecosystem.
This Birds of a Feather session brings together various folks involved in the hiring pipeline and engineers to share real-world experiences.

We’ll discuss what signals actually correlate with strong Rust skills, beyond resumes and buzzwords.
The session will explore practical interview strategies, evaluation techniques, and onboarding approaches. And a view for candidates into some of the things involved for what people interviewing are looking for.

Expect an open, discussion-driven format focused on lessons learned and actionable insights.

Author Bio:

Swarnim Arun is a Senior Software Engineer at Aftershoot, having interviewed dozens of candidates for Junior to Senior Rust focused roles at several companies.
