DESCRIPTION:## Background\n[The ACM SIGMOD/PODS Conference 2026](https://2
026.sigmod.org/) will be held in Bengaluru from 31 May to 5 June 2026.\n\n
To mark the occasion\, Rootconf is hosting a **special community edition f
ocused on databases on 29 and 30 May**\, bringing together practitioners a
nd researchers who build\, operate\, and study modern data systems.\n\nFol
lowing the success of the [Distributed Data Systems track at Rootconf 2025
 ](https://hasgeek.com/rootconf/2025)\, community members suggested creatin
g a space where industry engineers and database researchers can exchange i
deas\, experiences\, and lessons learned.\n\nThis edition of Rootconf aims
to do exactly that. With several database researchers and SIGMOD particip
ants visiting Bangalore\, this is an opportunity to explore how database i
deas move between research papers and production systems.\n\n---\n\n## The
me\nModern applications are pushing databases in new directions: distribut
 ed architectures\, AI-driven workloads\, global-scale deployments\, and in
creasingly strict reliability and security requirements.\n\nAt this specia
l Rootconf edition\, we invite talks that explore how databases are design
ed\, operated\, optimized\, and sometimes broken. **We are particularly in
terested in submissions that bridge research insights and production exper
 ience**.\n\nExample topics include:\n\n### Database architectures\n* Objec
 t-store–backed databases\n* Disaggregated databases (compute–storage s
eparation)\n* Lakehouse and hybrid architectures\n* HTAP systems (hybrid t
 ransactional/analytical processing)\n* Serverless or multi-tenant database
systems\n\n### Performance and scalability\n* Query optimization and inde
xing strategies\n* Operating databases at extreme scale\n* Observability a
nd performance debugging\n* Cost-aware query planning and workload optimiz
ation\n\n### AI and vector workloads\n* Vector databases and hybrid search
  architectures\n* Retrieval systems and embedding pipelines\n* AI-assisted
query optimization\n* Integrating LLM applications with databases\n\n###
Reliability and operations\n* Replication\, failover\, and disaster recove
ry\n* Incident postmortems and failure analysis\n* Schema evolution and sa
fe migrations\n* Multi-region database operations\n\n### Security and gove
 rnance\n* Fine-grained access control and row-level security\n* Data linea
 ge\, auditability\, and compliance\n* Privacy-preserving database systems\
n\n### War stories and lessons learned\n* Production incidents that reshap
ed your architecture\n* Unexpected performance regressions\n* Lessons from
large-scale database migrations\n* When theory met reality\n\n*If your ta
lk fits the broader theme of building or operating modern databases\, we e
ncourage you to submit even if it doesn’t fall neatly into the categorie
s above.*\n\n---\n\n## Formats\nWe welcome submissions in multiple formats
 :\n\n* **30-minute talk** – technical deep dive\n* **15-minute talk**
 – focused engineering experience\n* **Lightning talk (5 minutes)** – n
ew ideas\, experiments\, or early work\n* **Birds of Feather (BOF) proposa
 ls** – discussion on focussed topics\n* **Hands-on workshops** - where p
articipants follow instructors on their laptops \n\n**If you are presentin
 g research at SIGMOD\, consider submitting a practitioner-focused version
of your work for the Rootconf audience.**\n\n---\n\n## What makes a strong
submission\nWe look for submissions that clearly explain:\n* The **proble
m** you encountered\n* The **system design or approach** you adopted\n* **
Trade-offs** and alternatives you evaluated\n* **Lessons learned** that ot
hers can apply\n\nReal-world engineering stories and detailed technical in
sights are especially welcome.\n\n---\n\n## Meet the curation team\n* **An
irudh Rowjee** – Founder\, Bengaluru Systems meetup\n* **Kumar Abhijeet*
 * – Software Engineer\, Index Exchange\n* **Sandeep Joshi** –  Fifth E
lephant track editor\; Uber\n* **Sunil Sayyaparaju** – The Fifth Elephan
 t reviewer\; Aerospike\n* **Unmesh Joshi** – Distinguished Engineer\, Th
oughtworks\n\n---\n\n### Join the Rootconf review team\nIf you have signif
icant experience working with databases\, have spoken at conferences\, and
are willing to review submissions\, we’d love to hear from you.\n\n📧
  **[editorial@hasgeek.com](mailto:editorial@hasgeek.com)**\n\n---\n\n## Wh
y speak at Rootconf\n* Share your work with **database engineers\, distrib
uted systems practitioners\, and researchers**\n* Receive **constructive f
eedback** from an experienced review committee\n* Engage with the **SIGMOD
community visiting Bangalore**\n* Contribute to conversations that connec
 t **academic ideas with production systems**\n\n---\n\n## Deadline\n**30 A
pril 2026**\nEvery submission will be invited to give a 15-minute virtual
pitch to the review team before final selections.\n\n---\n\n## Questions?\
nIf you have questions about the CfP\, submission process\, or talk ideas:
\n\n📞 Call or message Rootconf: **+91 76763 32020**\n📧 Email: **[inf
