DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, Flipkart has successfully operated a private
cloud infrastructure consisting of millions of cores across multiple regio
ns. However\, the fluctuating compute requirements of 2x to 10x during maj
or sale events such as "Big Billion Days\," "Independence Day\," and "Repu
blic Day" often result in excessive underutilization of the infrastructure
outside of these peak periods. While public cloud infrastructure offers f
lexible capacity and streamlined integration with managed services\, its h
igher cost compared to private cloud infrastructure poses a challenge.\n\n
To address this challenge\, Flipkart is embarking on a journey towards a h
ybrid cloud model. This approach aims to leverage the strengths of both pu
blic and private clouds\, enabling Flipkart to optimize costs and enhance
business agility. In this talk\, we will talk about the specifics of Flipk
art's hybrid cloud strategy\, highlighting the optimizations implemented a
cross both private and public cloud environments.\n\n\n**Presentation Outl
ine:**\n* Introduction to Flipkart: Business Overview and Infrastructure R
equirements\n* Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of private\,
public\, and hybrid cloud models.\n* Overview of Flipkart's decision to a
dopt a hybrid cloud approach.\n* Building Blocks for Enabling Hybrid Cloud

DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\nIn this talk\, we will delve into the fascinat
ing realm of cost optimization and walk through the journey of Freshworks
as it scales its operations. We will cover various strategies and techniqu
es employed to optimize costs at each stage of growth\, from the early sta
rtup phase to achieving scale and efficiency.\n\nGrowth Phase : Startup to
Scale\n\nAs Freshworks started growing\, we encountered the need for arch
itectural transformations to accommodate increasing demands. We will discu
ss our tech stack evolution from a single product to a blue-green deployme
nt approach\, highlighting the architectural changes made at each stage an
d the driving factors behind them. These architectural changes brought abo
ut a substantial impact on our overall cost structure\, necessitating the
need for effective cost optimization strategies.\n\nTo achieve cost optimi
zation\, we implemented several techniques\, including booting up instance
s in stages\, partial shutdown of instances\, and adopting time-based inst
ances that align resource allocation with workload demands. Additionally\,
we will deep dive into our Reserved Instance (RI) coverage strategy\, whi
ch enables significant cost savings.\n\nNavigating the Transition Phase :
Agile Solutions\n\nAs the products scaled\, gaining visibility into cost a
llocation became crucial. We will share insights on how we tagged resource
s to track cost distribution and implemented Cloud Custodian policies to i
dentify and manage unused resources in lower environments. Furthermore\, w
e will discuss our successful adoption of spot instances\, leveraging thei
r cost benefits.\n\nInfrastructure Improvements : Best Practices and Strat
egies\n\nMigration from Opsworks to Kubernetes played a pivotal role in op
timizing compute costs. We will discuss the cost savings achieved through
this transition and elaborate on our data transfer cost optimization effor
ts\, including the use of VPC endpoints and interface endpoints for AWS se
rvices. Preventing inter-Availability Zone data transfer and rectifying fa
ulty VPC configurations further contributed to substantial cost reductions
. Moreover\, we will share how intelligent routing and inter-product/platf
orm communication optimization techniques minimized data transfer costs.\n
\nWe will deep dive into our log optimization strategies\, including enabl
ing compression on log shipping agents and implementing retention policies
for logs stored in CloudWatch and S3. Additionally\, we will discuss VPC
flow logs optimization\, highlighting the learnings from custom formatting
\, dropping unnecessary fields\, and the Parquet conversion process.\n\nEB
S optimization techniques such as migrating from GP2 to GP3\, right-sizing
volume sizes\, and configuring IOPS settings will be examined. Furthermor
e\, we will discuss how Keda autoscaling and resource optimization in Kube
rnetes and RDS improved efficiency and cost effectiveness.\n\nCost Control
and Proactive Monitoring\n\nProactive monitoring played a vital role in c
ost optimization. We will share insights on how we have tailored our optim
izations by automating processes for lower environments and implementing t
argeted alerts for production. We will also deep dive into how lambda func
tions are implemented alongside our Cloud Custodian policies\, and how we
harness the capabilities of tools like Mailer to deliver notifications via
SNS\, email\, or Slack.\n\nWe will also share insights on how we set up a
lerts for cost anomalies and budget utilization\, leveraged AWS Cost Explo
rer for insights and debugging cost anomalies\, and utilized Power BI dash
boards to gain comprehensive visibility into cost trends. Regular architec
tural reviews became a cornerstone of our cost optimization process.\n\nLo
oking Ahead : Future Initiatives\n\nWe will discuss potential future initi
atives\, including the adoption of SQS long polling\, exploration of Gravi
ton and Intel instances for enhanced performance and cost benefits\, and t
he implementation of a cell-based architecture to optimize communication w
ithin Availability Zones. Additionally\, we will explore the automation of
resource rightsizing as a focus area for further improvement and consider
spot instance adoption in production environments.\n\n\nIn conclusion\, t
his talk will provide valuable insights into the cost optimization journey
of Freshworks\, highlighting strategies\, techniques\, and lessons learne
d as we transitioned from startup to scale.\n\nDraft Document : https://do

DESCRIPTION:\n## Background\n\nThe client is a platform which enables the
Shopify store owners to launch mobile apps with Shopify as the backend. Th
e company saw rapid growth from its early days than the design and archite
cture could catch up. The founding team did a great job on the backend and
the frontend side however lacked the expertise in the cloud infrastructur
e side. Things were in great shape until Covid-19 happened. E-commerce wor
ldwide took a hit along with the revenue. \nIf revenue doesn’t grow heal
thily\, naturally expenses have to be controlled and for any organization
for which software is a major part\, cloud infrastructure costs are one of
the major expenses. \nWe helped such a client to **bring the AWS co
sts down by 41% (from $24\,653 to $14\,356 per month)** over a period of 6
months while launching new features/services. \n\n\n## Time needed for th
 e talk\n20 mins\n\n## Takeaway (from audience’s perspective)\nAudience w
ill learn about the journey of cost optimization and how it’s not just a
responsibility of the DevOps team. Cost optimization is a continuous proc
ess and primarily depends on the system architecture. \n\nThey will learn
about the pragmatic approach we took to reduce the costs. \n- Start with l
owest hanging fruits to get the momentum going.\n- Then focus on the highe
st expenses but be aware of the change that needs to be done. Downgrading
DB saves a lot but needs careful planning.\n- Use the techniques at hand (
Bash scripts/Spreadsheet) to collect data such as CPU/Memory to make infor
med decisions about proposed changes.\n- Think of cost as an engineering p
roblem. Bring visibility into cost allocation and set up continuous proact
ive monitoring and alerting.\n\n\n\n\n\n## Talk about the implementation d
etails\n\n- 1 dedicated SRE. Helped with operations as well as cost reduct
ion activities.\n- We did an initial analysis of the cost explorer to figu
re out the primary aws services responsible for cost. We found them to be
Compute\, RDS and Data Transfer.\n- For compute\n - Removed numerous un
attached EBS volumes due to terminated instances\, saving $2k/month. Also\
, identified the root cause and refined the process for creating new insta
nces.\n - FIlter down EC2 instances which had low CPU utilization on Cl
oudwatch. Then set up a simple memory monitoring script to write data into
csv locally. Copy the data into a spreadsheet and then share with the eng
ineering team. Suggest the alternate instance types for better utilization
based on the CPU and Memory data.\n - **For downgrading VMs we used ze
ro downtime strategies for migration.**\n- For RDS\n - Existing RDS whi
ch were over provisioned for handling CPU spikes\, we enabled slow query l
ogs and shared the insights with the dev team for optimizing the queries.
\n - We downsized RDS instance types using a blue-green deployment str
ategy so that there’s no business impact to users.\n - We also renego
tiated Reserved Instances plans due to the change in the instance types.\n
     - **Overall cost reduction for RDS was 56%.**\n- For DataTransfer char
ges\n - We analyzed the cost for intra region data transfer using VPC f
low logs and moved the highest chatting resources in the zone.\n - We a
lso found out that there was a duplication of job processing for backgroun
d workers. We worked with the dev team to identify the duplicate jobs and
stopped them.\n - We also implemented VPC endpoints for Opensearch ther
eby saving data transfer costs.\n - **Overall cost reduction for the Da
ta transfer costs was 90%**\nFor cloud governance\, \n- We streamlined the
IAM access via groups and policies and ensured no direct permissions are
assigned to any AWS user.\n- We set billing alerts and cost anomaly alerts
for important AWS services\n- We tagged all the important resources using
labels which are understood by the team.\n\n\n## Notes for the reviewers\
nWe will include the screenshots of the cost explorer and other graphs whe
re we show before and after the optimizations done in the slides.\n\n\n##

DESCRIPTION:## Background \n\n### About IDfy\n\nIDfy is a leader in the di
gital onboarding and verification space. \nWe enable our customers to seam
lessly onboard employees\, customers\, vendors\, users and more while prev
enting fraud at the same time.\nWe are a 80 member tech team which contrib
ute to multiple products on the platform. \n\n### About our Tech Platform\
n\nWe \n- are multi-cloud capable and manage single and multi-tenant deplo
yments in production.\n- run approximately 400 services across our platfor
m primarily hosted on Google Cloud.\n- rely heavily on Kubernetes\, contai
ners and several other cloud specific services.\n- operate multiple kinds
of workloads including ML training and inference workloads utilizing GPUs\
n\n### About this presentation\n\nWe will talk about why and how we went o
n our cost optimization journey and where we are today.\n\n## Cost optimiz
ation at IDfy\n\nThe initial impetus came about when we saw month-on-month
increase in infrastrucure costs without a linear increase in volumes. Thi
s got us thinking that something had to change. \nSo in late May 2022\, we
got around to optimizing our costs which paid off inside of 2 months.\n\n
The entire set of activities can be summarized under\n\n- People\n- Proces
s\n- Tools\n\n### People\n\n- Empowering team members to take decisions wh
ere and how to optimize and then quickly execute changes in days\n- Define
d ownership for continued cost monitoring and optimization\n\n### Process\
n\n- We had a clear set of guiding principles for areas of optimization\n
  - A baseline target was set\n - Quick improvements and changes with high
monetary impact were prioritized\n - Then the more complex changes were
picked up\n- Knowing when to stop (not over-stretching so as to impact oth
er deliverables)\n- Setting up practices for optimal setups\n- Continued m
onitoring\n\n### Tools\n\n- Breaking down cost dashboards\n- Really unders
tanding where costs come from (Service/SKU level breakdown)\n- Profiling\n
\n## Putting it all into action\n\n- Our costs really came from a few clou
 d resources\n - Compute\n - Databases\n - Logging\n - Managed Services
 \n\n- Basic principles\n - Stop what's not needed\, when not needed (Stag
ing environments)\n - Reduce replicas (fewer pods\, but nothing is impact
ed)\n - Cut the fat (overprovisioned cpu and memory from the good days)\n
   - Consolidate (shared resources)\n - Reduce reliance on costly managed
 services\n - Optimize (queries)\n - Clean up (unnecessary logs)\n\n- A f
ew steps down the road\n - Get a better deal from your cloud provider (di
 scounts\, cheaper performant hardware\, etc)\n - Committments (pay upfron
t for what you know you will need)\n - Deeper view into costs (slice\, di
 ce and compare)\n - Basic autoscaling\n\n- Today\n - Nuanced Autoscaling
\n - Profiling and optimization before deploying to prod \n - Continuous
monitoring (with set ownership of monitoring and reporting)\n - A proces
s of delegated ownership and action with a monthly checkpoint with leads\n
  \n## Outcomes\n- A cost reduction of close to 40% inside of 2 months\n- S
ome good practices and principles that have stuck with us\n- A sense of ow
nership around cost and continuous optimization mindset\n- Per unit cost t
hat has stayed the same or reduced since July 2022
