DESCRIPTION:I start with a simple pattern that most of us can relate to: a
microservice calling another via a REST API. I show how things can go wro
ng in this pattern and how we deal with them at Intuit.\n\nI cover 4 resil
iency design patterns in details: sharing the motivation\, key intuitions
and deep insights drawn from our experience of using them in production.\n
\n3 of the 4 patterns (bulkheads\, timeouts and circuit breaker) are bette
r researched on the internet. however\, the practical lessons we learnt ar
e rather unique and not easily available in public domain.\n\nthe 4th patt
ern\, management plane\, though used in practice\, is not discussed often.
in this talk\, I cover the principles and building blocks for this patter
n.\n\nI also touch upon Hystrix\, a popular library for microservice resil
iency and describe what it does and does not solve.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\n
Soubhik is a hands-on technical leader. In his current role at Intuit\, he
's focussed on building highly resilient microservices that deliver fricti
onless authentication experience to Intuit's users.\n\nHis past experience
spans across embedded operating systems for networking (Cisco)\, informat
ion extraction and search (Yahoo! and BloomReach)\, electronic design auto
 mation (Mentor Graphics and Atrenta).\n

DESCRIPTION:- how do you throttle?\n- using middleware? but by then reques
t has already hit your app.\n- if you are on aws\, you can use WAF but tha
t will only limit per 5 minutes and will base it on IP.\n- Let us think of
an open and portable alternative. How about nginx?\n- Nginx can rate limi
t for us. A dumb solution\, but it can help avoid spikes. We can rate limi
t based on IPs\, user names and lots of other parameters.\n- But we can on
ly put a single limit per parameter. We need it to be smarter.\n- Nginx su
pports Lua. Can we use it?\n- Enter OpenResty\, the Nginx bundle pre-compl
ied with Lua from by folks at cloudflare.\n- Let us add redis in the mix a
nd push user info there.\n- More money\, more API requests. We will be ric
h!!\n- each user will get a fixed number of tokens every minute. Once the
tokens are finished\, they can't use the API anymore.\n- API gets rejected
by Nginx itself\, so no need to bother app about it.\n- Benchmark.\n\n###
