DESCRIPTION:## What this talk is about\n\nWe engineered a Postgres databas
e cluster last year. It was a lot of learning and a lot of fun! This talk
is about the failure scenarios we designed for\, the times when the design
ed system failed\, and what we learnt from them.\n\n## A brief introductio
n to the talk:\n\n- Database clusters are built for one purpose – dealin
g with\n failure. Thinking about what can go wrong\, designing for failur
e\n scenarios\, and building multiple lines of defence was most of the\n
  work involved.\n \n- Building\, instrumenting\, monitoring and aut
omating the setup of a\n database cluster isn't easy. It involves many mo
ving parts\, each of\n which is subject to a certain amount of failure. W
e had to do this\n ourselves because there isn't an existing solution out
there.\n\n- Obviously\, we ran into issues: The failover wasn't quick eno
ugh\,\n there were network issues\, we had multiple masters\, we had to\n
recover from filesystem snapshots\, wait days for standbys to catch\n u
p\, etc. Each of these circumstances helped us understand and refine\n ou
r cluster setup.\n\n## As an aside\n- Given the theme "learning from failu
re"\, and given database systems\n is the first category mentioned\, it f
eels like this talk would fit\n hand in glove.\n\n## Skeleton of the talk
:\n\n1. Introduction to Postgres clusters\n - Introduce the cluster se
 tup\, it's purpose\, how it is expected to\n work\, and the moving p
arts in the system. \n - [5 minutes]\n2. Postgres re
 plication\n - Briefly explain "streaming replication"\, then explain w
hat can go\n wrong here. Hardware constraints\, WAL config\, long ru
nning\n queries on standbys\, and timeouts. This will broadly cover
 the\n cases invovling two databases.\n - [10 minutes]\n3. Failov
er setup\n - Briefly explain what repmgr does\, then explain what can
go\n wrong. Multiple masters\, no masters\, automatic failover doesn
 't\n work\, node isn't reachable\, node is partially reachable\,\n
etc. This will cover the cases invovling at least 3 databases.\n
 - [10 minutes]\n4. Application <=> Database communication\n     - Explain
what can go wrong here\, and then the Push/Pull mechanisms\n we buil
 t to deal with it.\n - [5 minutes]\n5. Disaster scenarios\n - What
to do when the cluster is down\, what to do to save your\n data\, w
hich backup/restore mechanism will work best for you\, how\n to use
 filesystem backups\, when not to rely on them.\n - [10 minutes]\n\n###

operations team at the same pace and reliability as the rest of the produc

DESCRIPTION:Monitoring today is no longer about creating a few dashboards
and alerts about the system and infrastructure metrics. Companies and orga
nizations are more interested to look at how their business transactions a
re getting impacted. Also in a Mobile-First world\, it has become extremel
y important to keep a close watch on your Mobile apps. Increasingly many o
f the monitoring solutions are focusing on how to do proactive monitoring
and anomaly detection rather than alert after an incident has already happ
ened. Companies are also thinking about how to use this treasure trove of
monitoring data to do insightful analytics and trend analysis\n\nIn this s
ession we will talk about some of the advancements in the monitoring lands
cape today. So for example how are some of the solutions doing advanced co
rrelation of alerts using unsupervised machine learning\, how can lambda a
rchitecture be used to do querying of data\, what are the new time series
databases that are making news\, how can concepts like dynamic baselines b
e used for anomaly detection and so on. This talk will not be about the di
fferent monitoring tools in the market but will focus more on the innovati
ons that are happening in the Monitoring domain and how they are relevant
in today's world.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI have been in the Monitoring dom
ain for the past 6 years and have worked with both open source and enterpr
ise solutions. In my earlier organization\, I was part of a development te
am that built a monitoring framework from scratch and that could do 1 mill
ion metric writes per second. Currently I am working as a DevOps architect
  in Intuit.\n

DESCRIPTION:As mentioned above\, this talk would look at how real-time wor
k flows take place in a TV newsroom. Beginning with the reporter on the gr
ound breaking the news to the information the viewer can finally see on th
eir TV screens. The talk can be broadly understood in three parts. Part 1:
Explainer of this process Part 2: Error Management Part 3: Challenges tha
t come to play in this system. \n\nAt this point\, I'm looking at a simple
work-flow presentation. If I'm able to make a video of this from the news

 ter.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI've been a journalist with CNN-IBN since May 2

DESCRIPTION:The Fedora Cloud SIG works to make Fedora successful on all ma
jor cloud platforms\, public and private. As a community we maintain\, bui
ld\, and release a set of images which not only covers the standard cloud
installations\, but also for Vagrant users in different operating systems.
Couple of\nrelease back we had some last minute release blocking bugs whi
ch escaped our manual qa effort from the community. This talk will re-intr
oduce Python programming language in a situation like above\, and how it h
elped to create an efficient automated testing framework up & running.\nTh
e major points of the talk:\n\n* Why didn't we just write some shell scrip
ts? What was the benifit of using Python\, a full blown programming langua
ge? (Hint: think about maintaining the codebase)\n* First introduction of
Python as unittests. Even though we were running shell commands\, and chec
king the output\, the introduction of unittests helped even new comers
to become a helping hand in the process. Showcasing the amount of flexibi
lity unittest module provided.\n* Boot -> Test -> Destroy: Moved the whole
process into a Python module. (Reusability in other codebases)\n* Minimal
configuration: `import json` came to rescue. Example of trying to do the
same over shell scripts.\n* In cloud there is no guaranty of successful i
nstances. We had to bring in another standard Python language\n feature c
alled `Decorator`. We will see diffrent code examples about how we can use
this language feature in different places.\n* Just 2 week before producti
on deployment\, rel-eng team said this is\n not what they want. We need t
o test Vagrant images. \n* Oops\, libvirt storage failure. Have to refresh
all storage volumes. Let us call another Python function.\n* Remember tho
se unittest module we talked about before? I never had to start writing te
sts from scratch\, someone will do that even before I start writing.\n* Ba
tteries included in Python. There is a readymade Python module to do anyth
ing you want. We had to add feature to control instances over AWS. Seems t
o be few more lines of code.\n* Total project is now around 1k lines of co
de\, 45KB rpm size. https://tunir.rtfd.org\n\nThis talk will showcase how
one can use these batteries to solve most of the problems in one's life (o
r the job). I will go through the code examples as required in the talk.\n

you are able to gain attention and interest for you project you feel moti

project is to treat you community well. This talk will share some experien

DESCRIPTION:For any decently big distributed / SoA system\, good monitorin
g is a must for smooth operations. Services emit different data for diagno
sibility and instrumentation - logs\, events and metrics. The semantics of
these 3 types of data are fundamentally different. For ex: Events must ha
ve millisecond latencies and not a single event can be dropped. Metrics ca
n be missed\, there will be more of them\, and can be aggregated at slight
ly larger (say 1 min) latencies. Log collection can have a longer latency
(~ 10 min) and volume is typically huge and ideally it must be indexed and
archived.\n\nTypically complex distributed systems use a combination of t
ools and architectures to collect these different data. For example\, stat
sd (with Graphite or InfluxDB) are be used for metrics collection. Logstas
h takes care of logs and piped to Kibana. Custom solutions (typically on d
istributed queues) are built for events. \n\nWe\, at Exotel\, have built a
single pipeline for data collection using Heka. Heka is an incredibly pow
erful and versatile data collection and processing framework developed by
Mozilla. Using a pipeline built on top of Heka\, we collect all 3 types of
data in a consistent way. We have written a library (currently in Go) whi
ch the any service uses for logging\, eventing and instrumentation. Goal o
f this talk is to explain our data pipeline architecture so that it is hop
efully useful for others building and operating distributed systems.\n\n##
 # Speaker bio\n\nI am Co-founder and CTO @ Exotel. And prior to Exotel\, I
was with Microsoft. I love distributed systems - building\, scaling\, mak
ing them robust and performant\, and most importantly\, maintainable.\n

DESCRIPTION:Microservices have rapidly evolved over the years as a popular
way of developing applications\, but they bring their own set of challeng
es in the form of what design pattern to use\, monitoring\, logging\, erro
r detection\, scaling and service discovery.\nWe will explore the common c
haracteristics and design patterns to be considered while dealing with ser
vice oriented architectures. We talk about Signal-Slots\, RPC architecture
s\, monitoring\, log and error handling\, function point scaling\, and com
mon unix philosohies that help you design scalable distributes systems.\nD
iving into code samples\, demos and production deployments\; I would like
to showcase Gilmour (http://github.com/gilmour-libs): a cross language lib

 non-HTTP transports.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nPiyush Verma is a Platform and

DESCRIPTION:Feature branching has been popular for long\, but everyone kno
ws about the “merge hell”\, a common issue because of long lived branc
hes or infrequent integration. How do you continuously merge\, test and re
lease software with great confidence without spending too much time on mer
ging and fixing conflict issues. That is where Mainline development\, one
of the key practices of Continuous Delivery\, comes into picture and Featu
re Toggle works in conjunction with the same. \n\nFeature Toggle [also ref
erred as Feature Flip\, Feature Switch\, Feature flag] is a simple techniq
ue which allows you to turn on or off a feature through configuration. Fea
ture toggles gives you the flexibility to toggle features in specific envi
ronments i.e. turn on a feature in testing or staging servers and turn it
off the same in production. This also helps to rollback features\, as roll
ing back is as simple as turning off the feature and deploying.\n\n### Spe

the TDD bug few years ago. Having done enough TDD in Ruby/Rails\, Javascr

DESCRIPTION:The MySQL world is full of tradeoffs and choosing a High Avail
ability (HA) solution is no exception. This session aims to look at all of
the alternatives in an unbiased nature. Preference is of course only give
n to opensource solutions. \n\nHow do you choose between: MySQL replicatio
n\, MHA\, DRBD\, Tungsten\, Galera Cluster? Do you integrate Pacemaker and
Heartbeat like Percona Replication Manager? Is NDB Cluster right for your
workload? The cloud brings even more fun as geographical redundancy is ro
lled into this. There are now even "modern" tools to assist in automation
 like Orchestrator\, Consul\, MariaDB MaxScale & MySQL Router.\n\nThis and
more will be covered in a walkthrough of MySQL HA options and when you wil
l apply them.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nColin Charles works on the MariaDB Ser

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we'll learn how to setup and benchmark differ
ent container orchestration tools. We'll take a real world example of a we
b application with database backend. We will setup a few contianer orchest
ration tools including Docker compose and swarm\, Kubernetes and Mesos and
see how they build and scale containers to meet ever-increasing traffic.\
n\nOutline of the content:\n1. Building docker image(s) which will be depl
oyed - 30 minutes\n2. Deploying the images manually and agreeing that it i
 s a bad idea - 10 minutes\n3. Understanding and deploying single instance
via Docker compose - 20 minutes\n4. Understanding and scaling via Docker S
warm - 20 minutes\n5. Understanding\, deploying and scaling via Kubernetes
  - 30 minutes\n6. Debate: Kubernetes vs native Docker tools - 5 minutes\n7
 . Understanding\, deploying and scaling via Mesos-Marathon - 30 minutes\n8
 . Debate: Mesos-Marathon vs Kubernetes - 5 minutes\n9. Debate: What should
  we use in what situations? - 10 minutes\n\nTotal Duration: 3 Hours\n\n###
