Server monitoring and notification routing using sensu and flapjack

Abstract

To introduce alternatives to more widely used monitoring servers like nagios and ganglia.
To demonstrate setting up a monitoring and notification routing setup with minimum effort.

Outline

I will be broadly talking about:

Sensu

  • Installation
  • Understanding configuration files
  • How to collect metrics using sensu and integration with graphite

Flapjack

  • Installation
  • Integrating with Sensu
  • Understanding the notification rules
  • Defining contacts, entities and notification rules
  • Setting up notification gateways

Requirements

Beginner knowledge of ruby gems and json will be helpful.

    Managing about 20+ server, ( Frontend, database, cashing server, application server)

    (1) What the current problem statement
    (2) Why did you select Sensu over other tools. Other alternates is M/Monit ? Can u compare with other available tools ?
    (3) Features of sensu :: Can Scale automatically, what else ?
    (4) Self healing / Auto healing, an example our load balance went down. Based on event type we can exexute a command. Issue escalation by issue another command by
    (6) Real time dashboard from justeat.in server
    (7) Demo of a basic setup ?
    (8) page Duty, Campfire, flapjack, integration. Detail about flapjack integration.
    (9) What sensu cant do, Rabit for metrics collection not possible (since it slows down the system)
