Our Lean Practices for Remote Teams is a series focused on strengthening a remote work culture, and the lean practices that workplaces can adopt during the transition from office-centric to online team management.

Session 2 - Becoming an effective remote work employee

In the second installment of Reboot Fest’s Lean Practices for Remote Teams series, we talked about making the transition to what is essentially a whole new work culture. How do you train yourself to adhere to standards of discipline and accountability while working remotely? How do you separate the personal from the professional?

From communication to goal setting to team co-ordination, we discussed how to come to terms with the many challenges of remote work, both as individuals and as teams.

  1. Rabimba Karanjai: Rabimba Karanjai is a full time graduate researcher, part-time hacker and FOSS enthusiast. He works with Mozilla Research Mixed Reality team on WebVR. He also is a Mozilla TechSpeaker and Google Developer Expert on Web Technologies (WebXR). He loves to chat about VR, AR, security and openweb over a cup of coffee or bottle of beer.

  2. Ashok Hariharan: Ashok Hariharan is a legal and legislative technology specialist. Ashok runs Bungeni Consulting which focuses on supporting the automation of various legal and legislative processes, which typically end in the publication of a legal or legislative document. Ashok has built and led an inclusive team of software developers at Bungeni at various points in the company’s life span.

  3. Indrani Samajpati heads brand strategies, sales, and wears other hats at Paytm Insider. Indrani has been a marketing and sales professional thoroughout her career and has worked with quite a few startups, including Café Coffee Day. Indrani hails from the city of nawabs, Lucknow. She has been in Bangalore (cumulatively) seven-odd years and loves the city.

We looked at how remote work helps to hire for inclusivity, participants had many questions on reporting structures, trust, productivity, and more - not just gender diversity.

  1. Rahul Gonsalves: Called ‘one of the faces of New India’ by Forbes, Rahul started his career in design creating websites and then moved on to designing mobile apps for major internet companies such as Flipkart and Myntra. Despite his training as an economist, Rahul’s desire to create well-crafted digital products led him to bring together some of the best design and engineering talent from across the country to found Obvious. Obvious has established its brand reputation as being a company that actively hires for diversity. Rahul has led Obvious’s diversity hiring effort, and has frequently spoken about his experiences.

  2. Shipra Pandit: Shipra has been an HR professional for the past 10 years. Shipra is currently a senior HR manager at Juspay Technologies, where she has led the initiative to hire for diversity among Haskell and functional language programmers. Juspay Technologies recently received an award from Assocham India for being an ‘Equal Opportunity Enabler’ for unbiased/inclusive hiring - not limited to demography, religion, gender, but only limited to skills.
