DESCRIPTION:The fundamental assumption of the cloud is that someone else r
uns your machines\, buys your disks and routes your network. Unfortunately
that means that there is really no way you can tell when a machine will f
ail\, when a storage setup will error out and when your network connectivi
ty will choke.\n\nEven in such an error prone and unreliable setup\, it is
still possible to get a reliable system with great uptime by making your
applications more agile. Most importantly\, recovery from failure takes a
different approach from a fixed node setup by an always roll-forward dynam
 ic system.\n

DESCRIPTION:As developers we have seen these problems:\n\nOur development
environments accumulate lots of applications and libraries over a period o
f months.\n\nWe are usually in the habit of installing everything in one m
achine.\n\nWe fear that we may screw up our development environment and th
at means unproductive man-hours.\n\nWe forget that a multi-machine deploym
ent is different from a single machine deployment.\n\nHow about virtualiza
tion in the desktop?\n\nIn this demo\, I will take you through the steps t
o create a multi-VM development environment.\n\nThis demo will make use of
QEMU\, KVM and Virt Manager and show you how you can create a VM image\,
and then start servers with a set of commands\, deploy your app\, test eve
rything and tear down the environment once you are happy - all this in the
cosy comforts of your laptop or desktop.\n

DESCRIPTION:Some Eucalyptus Facts:\n\n- Most widely-deployed software plat
form for on-premise IaaS clouds \n- 25\,000+ cloud starts to date and grow
 ing\n- AWS-compatible\, enterprise-deployed\n- Hypervisor agnostic\, Hardw
are agnostic\n- Deep cloud partner and AWS ecosystem\n- Mature and Product
ion-quality Open Source Software\n- Strong OpenSource Leadership (Marten M
 ickos\, Rich Wolski\, Said)\n\nAbout Eucalyptus Systems: \n\nEucalyptus Sy
stems provides IT organizations in enterprises\, government agencies\, Web
and mobile businesses\, and industry partners the most widely deployed so
ftware platform for on-premise Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds.
To date\, over 25\,000 Eucalyptus clouds have been started all over the w
orld\, including more than 20 percent of Fortune 100 companies. \n\nEucaly
ptus is specifically designed for enterprise use\, and the software platfo
rm is uniquely suited for hybrid clouds. Built as an open source product\
, Eucalyptus supports the industry-standard cloud API\, Amazon Web Service
s\, as well as all major virtualization platforms. The company has an ac
tive and growing ecosystem of customers\, partners\, developers and resear
chers that benefit from Eucalyptus' open\, fast and standards-compliant pa
 th to cloud computing.\n

DESCRIPTION:I was the founding CTO of Kosmix which has now been acquired b
y Walmart for their ecommerce efforts. Kosmix started off in 2004 as a nex
t generation search engine - the thesis was that categorization was fundam
ental to understanding the (info in the) web.\n\nIn any case\, as a result
of this endeavour we built a huge scalable system that crawled and indexe
d over 10 billion URLS and served over million search queries each day. Ri
ghthealth.com powered by Kosmix became the #1 health web site in the world
in terms of traffic.\n\nWe realized first hand the need for a distributed
file system such as GFS\, the need for a job tracking system that would a
uto restart failed jobs automatically\, the need for a computation framewo
rk that would make many computations simple and easy (now MapReduce\, Pig\
, hive etc.). \n\nWe had to write some code in assembly to get the perform
ance that was desired to keep the capex budget blowing out of proportion.
\n\nI am also involved and have helped several other large data projects\n
such as Citrusleaf (www.citrusleaf.net)\; Inmobi's data warehouse\; helped
a few companies reason about how to build what the Aadhaar project (UID p
roject) needs in terms of scale.\n\nAs far back as 1988 I was involved wit
h building parallel database \nsystems (Gamma from UW Madison\, Brahma at
IIT Bombay where I was a faculty member) which in todays world would have
been called a DB system in the cloud -- but really there is nothing new co
nceptually in the idea of distributing data and work to multiple machines
and collating the results. \n\nI am looking for feedback on what aspects i
f any of these experiences would be interesting to the community. Accordin
gly we could tailor the session..\n\nHere are some possible focus areas -
topics I can think of where\nwe can delve deep:\n\ni) Building a large da
ta warehouse (using cloud computing) - Issues\n How large is larg
e? Do we need real time answers to queries? Are queries of streaming varie
ty (need to look at only the latest data)? Depending on the tradeoffs that
are possible different solutions can be manufactured from a combination o
 f Hadoop\, Hive\, Pig\, and other FOSS.\n\nii) Building a Feature Rich Ult
ra Fast Web Search (using cloud computing)\n How does one build an ultr
a fast search engine that also gives \n categorized results? How does on
e put together disparate media types in a search result? How does one rank
these disparate media types..\n\niii) Building a large scalable search ba
 ckend (a system for crawling\, indexing\, annotating\, categorizing etc.)
 for billions of URLS.\n
