 w fields where this is as true as it is in politics. New age campaign meth
 ods use voting data extensively to build campaigns and shape the thoughts 
 of voters. This in itself isn't bad\, but it becomes so when the data is s
 o granular that it allows for micro-targeting of voters along caste and co
 mmunity lines\, and when it can be used to systematically disenfranchise v
 oters who are statistically unlikely to vote for a particular political pa
 rty. This talk will explain some of the ways in which political parties us
 e data in their campaigns\, and how that would manifest in a world of elec
 tronic voting and blockcahins in elections.\n\nBio: \n\nShivam Shankar Sin
 gh is a data analyst\, campaign consultant and author of the bestsellers\,
  How to Win an Indian Election (Penguin\, 2019) and The Art of Conjuring A
 lternate Realities (HarperCollins\, 2021). He started out in politics as a
  Legislative Assistant to a Member of Parliament (LAMP) Fellow and went on
  to witness the process of conjuring political realities while managing da
 ta analytics for some of India’s largest political parties.\n\nHe is a p
 anelist on national television and writes for several news publications on
  data and politics. He graduated from the University of Michigan – Ann A
 rbor with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and is a 2021-22 Schwarzman S
 cholar.

DESCRIPTION:\nThe Citizens’ Commission on Elections (CCE) was set up in 
 March 2020 to critically analyse India’s electoral processes in accordan
 ce with democracy principles. We present here an analysis of the Electroni
 c Voting Machine (EVM) and the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) sy
 stem\, based on the first volume of the Commission’s report [Lokur et al
 .\, 2021]. The main recommendations of the report are a) modify the curren
 t design of the VVPAT system to make it truly ‘voter verified’ and b) 
 move away from certification of election equipment to end-to-end verifiabi
 lity of the election outcome\, which requires a well-defined audit process
  of manual counting of a statistically significant sample of the VVPAT sli
 ps.
