DESCRIPTION:Cooking forms the core of our cultural identity other than bei
ng the basis of nutrition and health. The increasing availability of culin
ary data and the advent of computational methods for their scrutiny are dr
amatically changing the artistic outlook towards gastronomy. Starting with
a seemingly simple question\, ‘Why do we eat what we eat?’ data-drive
n research conducted in our lab has led to interesting explorations of tra
ditional recipes\, their flavor composition\, and health associations. Our
investigations have revealed ‘culinary fingerprints’ of regional cuis
ines across the world\, starting with the case study of Indian cuisine. Th
e application of data-driven strategies for investigating gastronomic data
has opened up exciting avenues giving rise to an all-new field of ‘Comp
utational Gastronomy’. This emerging interdisciplinary science asks ques
tions of culinary origin to seek their answers via the compilation of culi
nary data and their analysis using methods of statistics\, computer scienc
e\, and artificial intelligence. Along with complementary experimental stu
dies\, these endeavors have the potential to transform the food landscape
by effectively leveraging data-driven food innovations for better health a
nd nutrition.\n\n\n### About the Speaker\nProf. Ganesh Bagler is an interd
isciplinary researcher and is considered the pioneer of ‘Computational G
astronomy\,’ the emerging data science that blends food with artificial
intelligence. Trailblazing research from his lab has established foundatio
ns of this niche area that deals with food\, flavors\, nutrition\, and hea
lth. Prof. Bagler has an audacious dream of transforming the global food l
 andscape through data-driven innovations.\n

DESCRIPTION:Choice Architecture is the careful design of\nenvironments in
which people decide based on the choices available.\nResearch has shown th
at people’s decisions can be greatly influenced\nby small changes in the
context of how choices are presented to them.\nA Choice Architect has the
responsibility for organising the context\nand furnishing the choices usi
ng which people make decisions. Since\nInteraction designers (IXDs) are co
nstantly creating environments with\ntheir designs which influence the way
people choose\, every Interaction\nDesigner is a Choice Architect. A crit
ical responsibility of Choice\nArchitects is to protect people’s right t
o choose. With relevant\nexamples\, this talk makes a case of how Interact
ion Designers need to\ncreate applications where the user feels that he is
in control\, where\nthey use ‘nudges’ to guide — not force — the
users down a certain path\nand in the end\, design applications which are
a delight to use.\n\n### About the Speaker\nAsad Ali Junaid is with Adobe
Inc. as an Experience Designer.\nJunaid has about fifteen years of industr
y experience as an\nExperience/ Interaction Designer contributing to compa
nies such as\nOracle\, IBM\, Intel\, among others. Junaid has a multidisci
plinary\nbackground with MS degrees in Human Factors Psychology and in\nEl
ectrical Engineering as well. Junaid is also an entrepreneur and an\nautho
r of an epistolary novel. Junaid has several teaching credits and\nregular
ly teaches and conducts workshops on HCI and Creativity.

DESCRIPTION:Do I zoom in to a data point or do I give the big picture firs
t? Do I explain first or do I let the reader interact and explore from the
get go? Since scroll is the most powerful interaction on the page\, how d
oes one structure a visual story? How do all these pieces fit together to
make sure the reader’s curiosity is met or at least piqued?\n\nA data an
d graphics journalist tries to answer these and many more questions! You
’ll walk away with a sense of what goes into structuring information for
narrative visualisations in news. \n\n### About the Speaker\nGurman is a
data and graphics journalist at Reuters in Singapore where she tells stori
es with code. At the intersection of journalism\, design and code\, her wo
rk is a combination of data extraction\, analysis and forming compelling n
arratives around data.\n\nFor the past year\, she has been covering the pa
ndemic\, working on data-driven stories about various aspects of the virus
. She has told the story of pollution in Delhi through a set of photograph
s\, as well as created visualisations with the faces of over 8\,500 candid
ates contesting in the Indian election. Once\, she also analysed 25\,000 B
ollywood songs to show the decline of the female solo.\n\nA self-taught co
der and designer\, Gurman holds a Masters in Journalism from Columbia Univ
ersity. Previously\, she worked at Hindustan Times as part of their first
data and interactives team. She also has the experience of working with lo
cal investigative teams in the United States. She is a former Google News
Fellow and guest faculty at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. He
r work has garnered awards internationally including the Malofiej Infograp
hic Summit Awards and GEN data journalism awards.
