DESCRIPTION:Through a series of design techniques & hands-on exercises\, p
articipants will be sensitised to the nuances which make interfaces intuit
ive & elegant.\n\nThis workshop has been conducted earlier at Nasscom Prod
uct Conclave (NPC 2013). Meta Refresh will see a much more evolved version
of this workshop based on the experience & feedback recieved at NPC 2013.
 \n\nWho should attend?\n\nProduct Managers\nAspiring designers (Might be t
oo basic for experienced designers)\nWeb Developers \nStartup Founders\n\n
 ### Speaker bio\n\nAs the Design Head\, Sunit is responsible for the user
experience of products across Cleartrip. He's been instrumental in setting
the tone for Cleartrip Mobile & led the recent redesign. Sunit graduated
from J. J. School of Art to be a painter\, followed by a post grad in Comm
unication Design from the Industrial Design Centre\, IIT Bombay. While he
has built & mentored design teams through his career\, his background in f
ine art keeps him thoroughly hands-on. Previously\, he's led design at bur
 rp! and Paper Plane.\n

DESCRIPTION:A good designer can design nice\, beautiful interfaces and can
make the life of the users easy. A great designer will not only make it e
asy for the users but also for everyone involved\, including the whole tea
m - by writing production ready codes\, which are easier to integrate with
the developer environment and be ready to be shipped as part of the deplo
yment process.\n\nAs a designer\, you do not want to look at the final out
put and start hating your developers. You don’t want to be arguing with
them - “that’s not how I designed it.” You should be able to own the
design and be part of the process from the start to the end-result.\n\nLe
 t’s talk about\;\n\n * A Command Line Tool - don’t be intimidated\,
we will just use few easy ones.\n * GUI Tools in lieu of the Command Lin
 e.\n * CSS Pre-processors - SASS\, LESS\n * Yeoman\, Bower\, Grunt\n
  * Linting - CSSLint\, JSLint\n\nFinally\, be friendly with the developers
in your team\, learn from them and steal their tools to make your life ea
sier. It will not only make it easy for them\, you can teach them a thing
or two. In the end\, everyone else will respect you for your work.\n\n###
Speaker bio\n\nBrajeshwar believes in simplicity\, pushes the envelop and
envisions the betterment of usable and practical solutions.\n\nBrajeshwar
is a product manager/director and team leader with a deep appreciation of
the relationship between meaningful design and powerful backend solutions.
  He's been a backend developer\, turned front-end designer\, with a proven
track record of building products.\n\nHe has a proven track record of cre
ating products and managing teams in multiple environments\, ranging from
startups to well established companies. On his journey\, Brajeshwar has wo
rked with some of the brightest teams\, clients and investors.\n

DESCRIPTION:We are perpetually on our toes to absorb the latest technologi
es that power the web and make use of them in our projects. However\, in d
oing so\, we often overlook and break [the principles that the web has bee
n built on](http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Principles.html) over the past
two decades. Even if we choose to turn blind towards philosophies\, standa
rds or doing things the right way\, we simply cannot ignore the proliferat
ion and diversity of devices and user agents today.\n\nThis workshop will
revisit [the spirit of the web](http://bradfrostweb.com/blog/post/the-spir
 it-of-the-web-jeremy-keith-at-smashing-conference/) — understanding what
makes the web special and how to embrace the principle of progressive enh
ancement to build robust websites. We shall create a very simple project s
tarting from scratch and build it in layers so that the final code works f
lawlessly across many different systems and devices — both _feature-rich
_ and _featureless_.\n\n“The best way to be future-proof is to be backwa
 rds compatible.”\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI am a co-founder of [Miranj](htt
p://miranj.in)\, a web design studio in New Delhi\, and have been making w
ebsites for a few years now. I am a programmer at heart\, love music and a

DESCRIPTION:Responsive Web Design has become a big buzz word. Everybody's
doing it. And all the frameworks have added support for partially responsi
ve sites.\n\nYet\, too many people are doing it in the wrong way. We're us
ing frameworks that make all the decisions for us. But almost all of them
follow just a single basic pattern\, multiple columns that merge into a si
ngle column. And this results in layouts that aren't really that great.\n\
nCan we do better? There are numerous Responsive Design patterns\, and yet
we don't use them because they seem difficult to implement. But they are
not.\n\nIn this workshop\, you'll learn how to make websites that provide
a great experience on every device. We are going to learn how to build a f
ew different and unique responsive design patterns from scratch. In the pr
ocess you'll learn techniques that you will be able to use in your own pro
jects and with any framework.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI've been designing &
developing web applications for the last nine years. I currently specializ
e in cross-device Responsive Web Design and Web application accessibility.
\n\nI am particularly concerned that as web developers we are more interes
ted in the next cool feature or technology\, but ignore the basics\, and i
n the process break the web for a large number of users.\n

\n\nIn the session we will try to find out the best answers these question

DESCRIPTION:Improving user experience is part art and part science. This t
alk would focus on the science.\n\nMaking data driven decisions for a webs
ite involves:\n\n1. Tracking all user actions along with contextual variab
les\n2. Identifying gaps in the experience\, or opportunities\, by look at
the tracked data\n3. Coming up with a list of hypotheses around possible
reasons for the gaps\n4. Figuring ways to validate the hypotheses and narr
owing the list down\n5. Releasing features or UX improvements to address t
he gaps\n6. Isolating and measuring the impact of these features or improv
ements\n7. Letting the fittest features or improvements survive\, and iter
ating this process\n\nWe'll explore each of these steps in detail\, along
with relevant examples.\n\n### Who would find it useful?\n\n- Online pro
duct managers(beginners)\n- Startup folks working on an online product\n-
Frontend Engineers\n- UX and UI designers\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nIn my l

.\n\nBefore starting up\, I was the Product Manager for Myntra.com's front
end\, where I more than doubled the number of purchases per 100 visitors(c
onversion rate) by creating a good user experience and improving on it wit
h the support of data.\n\nPrior to this\, I worked as a full stack enginee

DESCRIPTION:A multitasking designer is one of the key stakeholder in a sta
rtup's early stages where they define the product. As exciting this phase
intellectually for the designer\, this is also a stage where he/she tend t

measures that i take to avoid those.\n\nHere are the taking points for th

DESCRIPTION:Each iA project is tailored to the client’s specific needs.
However\, there is a set of recurring modules that appear throughout many
projects.\n\n### Analyzing the context\nDesign is not about creating nice
surfaces\, but about understanding how things work under the hood and givi
ng them the most useful external form\n\n**How we discover and analyze the
context of design projects**\n\n### Awareness building through user resea
rch\n\nArguments about design can only be fruitful when based in a solid u
nderstanding of the end user’s needs\n\n**How we use user research to bu
ild our client’s awareness of his client’s needs**\n\n### Keeping the
initial scope under control\n\nProject overstretch is a very real danger i
n large scale design projects\n\n**How we get started when the mountain ah
ead seems too high to climb**\n\n### Painting the future in bright colors\
n\nOverambitious projects can fail\, but many more projects yield mediocre
results simply because the big vision got lost somewhere along the way\n\
n**How we try to reconcile the wish for a „perfect“ interface with the
sometimes sad reality of what’s feasible in the short term**\n\n### Can
’t we just iterate?\n\nWhy we sometimes think that it’s useful to go f
or the big overhaul of a design and why we sometimes try to avoid it\n\n##
 # Grinding?\n\nSo we understood the context\, everybody is aware of the pr
oject and wants to go on with it\, there’s this wonderful future interfa
ce prototype\, an overall information architecture\, a beautiful design li
ne. Now all we need to do is draw another 150 pages in Photoshop\, right?
Nope.\n\n* How we break down seemingly overwhelming projects into manageab
le parts\n* How we ensure consistency over large projects\n* How we approa
ch implementation in cooperation with large tech teams\n\n### Speaker bio\

ith a focus on complex concept and design challenges in interactive produc
ts. He is a co-founder of Cucumbertown\, a San Francisco and Bangalore bas

 hods and formats\n * TrueDoc (PFR)\n * Embedded OpenType (EOT)\n
 * Vector Markup Language (VML) and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)\n * S
calable Inman Flash Replacement (sIFR)\n * Web Open Font Format (WOFF)\
n * System fonts on mobile devices: the incompatibility table\n* Explor
 e current methods to secure webfonts\n * base64 embedding\n * subset
ting (splitting into multiple font files\, only loading the letters used)\
 n * Roll your own with connect-fonts\n * WOFF (zlib/gzip compres
sion\, then telling useragent to decode the file)\n* Compare the performan
ce of each methods\n * Flash of unstyled texts (FOUT)\n * The proble
m of blank content\, and how to prevent it:\n * Make separate CSS t
hat only loads font file\n * Use JavaScript to precache font file\n
         * Hosting providers automate them for you (why load yet another co
py of Open Sans if it’s been loaded by another site before?)\n * Para
llel loading of smaller files\n* What’s next\n * Chromium started dow

DESCRIPTION:In this session we'll look at Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).
SVG offers great opportunities to use for graphic elements on websites. Th
ey look great on all screens including retina displays. They can be easily
embedded in CSS due to their small size. They also offer interactivity wh
ich means they can do more then just be an image on a site. These advantag

DESCRIPTION:Gulpjs is a new entrant in the field of task runners written i
n JavaScript. It is an alternative to the very popular Gruntjs.\n\nAfter t
his session\, those not familar with task running\, will instantly fall in
love with Gulpjs\, and make task running with Gulpjs a part of their life
\; those using Gruntjs are likely to make a switch.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\n

DESCRIPTION:CSS(3) animations have always been considered as a treat to th
e eyes if used properly but how about collaborating it with some JavaScrip
 t to make something amazing. \n\n> Say\, if a user clicks a delete button\
, a span of elements\, just vanishes? How about making it slide out or dis
appear relatively slow? Neither information is literally thrown at a user
nor snatched away from him. Infact\, such transitions can provide context
to information and hence enhance the user experience.\n\n\nI will be talki
ng about how to effectively use transitions in simple events like **onhove
r** or **onfocus** to slightly complicated ones like seamless **appearance
s/disappearances**\, **movement** within an application. The mathematics b
ehind CSS 3 Animations and how to use them can also be a included if time
allows.\nThis will help to bridge the line between the user experience des
igners &amp\; developers and help them give users something out of the wor
 ld.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI am Raghu Nayyar\, a 21 year old Interaction De

DESCRIPTION:WebComponents's Polyfill is havy and slow. We do not need it t
o write web applications in Components-way. We could create components sin
ce HTML4\, CSS1 and ECMAScript3 epoch. But this idea became popular only t
hese days.\n\nThere are few key ideas in Components:\n\n* Everything is
Component even your app\n* Declarative Custom Elements with CSS\, DOM an
 d JavaScript isolation\n* Two way data binding\n* HTML Imports\n\nEach
idea can be implemented with help of familiar tools:\n\n* Everything is
  Component: NPM\, Bower\n* Declarative Custom Elements: BEM & OOCSS\n*
JavaScript isolation: CommonJS/Modules compiled by LMD\n* Two-way data
binding: AngularJS-style Dirty checking or Accessors (getters and setters)
\n* HTML Imports: BEM\, Loaders and Transpilers\n\nI will show you how t
o use reusable components today!\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nMy name is Mikhail.

DESCRIPTION:RIA (Rich internet applications) traditionally run inside a br
owser environment. This provides various benefits like always-up-to-date c
ode\, a no-install experience among others.\n\nBut what if your applicatio
n is more important and it needs a full-fledged desktop application for a
high degree of access. The benefits of running your RIA on the desktop are
:\n\n1. More access to resources like filesystem\, sound\, etc.\n2. Abilit
y to run native code like C++ (for some frameworks) to do heavy lifting an
d display in JavaScript.\n3. Make it easy to run for users who don't updat
e their browsers\, and cannot grok the concept of a web application.\n\nTh
is talk won't be an evangelizing session about the benefits of moving your
apps on a desktop\, but real-world practical advice on what to do if you
want to. The structure of the talk will be:\n\n1. I take a sample demo app
which I'll port on every platform I'm testing.\n2. I present whatever pit
falls and difficulty I had with different systems.\n3. I summarize the amo
unt of code/time it took to convert a web app into desktop app with each p
latform.\n\nThe platforms that I intend to cover are:\n\n* Chrome Embedded
  Framework\n* Chrome packaged apps\n* Webkit GTK+\n* Adobe AIR\n* Appjs\n*
  Tide SDK\n* node-webkit\n* QT's QHtml5Application\n* HeX\n* Bellite\n\n##
