Meta Refresh 2012

Web design could use some new ideas. We have the tech now.

HTML5 and CSS3 have very quickly moved from being tentative new standards to the base standards for every major desktop and mobile browser. HTML5 is now just HTML, a modular, living standard that no longer needs a version number.

Now that we are no longer fighting over platforms, it’s time to put the specs aside and revisit the construction of user interface: how do we raise the bar for stellar user interface on the web?

Meta Refresh is a follow-up to DocType HTML5 from 2010-11 and is a conference on web UI engineering.

Responsive Web Design with CSS3 Media Queries

Submitted Oct 13, 2011

The boom of mobile devices has turned the world of web design upside down. Users no longer view web content only on traditional desktop systems, but are increasingly using smartphones, tablets, and other devices with a wide range of dimensions. The challenge for web designers is to ensure that their websites look good not only on a big screen, but also on a tiny phone and everything in between.

This Session provides an overview of media queries, including examples that will help jumpstart your own multiscreen website development.

Outline

Screen resolution nowadays ranges from 320px (iPhone) to 2560px (large monitor) or even higher. Users no longer just browse the web with desktop computers. Users now use mobile phones, small notebooks, tablet devices such as iPad or Playbook to access the web. So the traditional fixed width design doesn’t work any more. Web design needs to be adaptive. The layout needs to be automatically adjusted to fit all display resolution and devices. This Workshop will show you how to create a cross-browser responsive webdesign with HTML5 & CSS3 media queries.
