DESCRIPTION:Before actually doing computation on data\, one needs to clean
up a\nmessy data set\, which almost always involves some kind of string\n
 manipulation\, pattern matching\, invoking shell commands\, or even\nrunni
ng some code in another language\, and then convert it to another\nformat\
, send it over the network or serve via a HTTP server.\n\nTraditionally pe
ople working with data have accepted it as a fact of\nlife that their comp
uting language is terrible at doing any of this.\nAnything other than matr
ix or vector operations ought to be the job of\nanother general purpose la
nguage - be it Python\, Ruby or Java. But\nJulia begs to differ\, and prov
ides principled primitives for doing all\nof this and more.\n\nThis talk i
s about the design and implementation of some of the\ngeneral purpose prog
ramming features in Julia. Shelling out\, Julia’s\ntake on Unix pipes\,
  generic asynchronous IO framework\, string\nmanipulation\, string macros\
, package management and open source\nworkflow - all of the stuff that let
you do everything without jumping\nbetween languages\, or hiring a team o
f bearded perl hackers.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nI'm a data scientist and app
lied mathematician. I've previously worked at Akamai\, Citrix Online\, and
  Etsy. Currently\, I'm working on a next-generation programming language f
or numerical and scientific computing\, called Julia.\n

in Julia. Elly is a Hadoop HDFS and Yarn client. It is a pure Julia implem

parallel constructs on a Yarn cluster: addprocs\, @parallel\, spawn\, pma

material we are building for Julia.\n\nWe will learn how open source softw
are systems can co-exist\, and together can make a viable alternative to e
stablished commercial software. For example\, with Julia's computing powe

fill a long felt need\, as such capabilities exist only in commercial syst

DESCRIPTION:ThreeJS.jl is a Julia wrapper around the very popular threejs
library for rendering 3D scenes in browsers using JavaScript. This allows
the user to create 3D graphics which can be viewed in a browser\, giving r
ise to possibilities of embedding such scenes in Jupyter notebooks and usa

DESCRIPTION:Aircraft wings\, especially those of fighter jets are prone to
failure due to the strain on them. Parts of the aircraft have sensors mou

about how Julia can be used to both interface with the sensors to gather d

DESCRIPTION:[MySQL.jl](https://github.com/JuliaComputing/MySQL.jl) is a ju
lia interface to the MySQL C connector. Apart from wrappers around MySQL C
functions\, MySQL.jl provides high level features such as converting MySQ
 L results to [DataFrames](https://github.com/JuliaStats/DataFrames.jl).\n\
nThe aim of this talk is to show how low-level programming can be done in
julia. Calling C functions and working with C data types and pointers is e
asier in julia compared to other high level languages. Also\, using type a
nnotations and memory preallocations we can achieve near C speeds without
affecting code readability.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nHi\, I work at Julia Com

DESCRIPTION:You've seen the benchmarks\, the speed stories\, and the hyper
bolic sounding optimism of Julians. But let's answer the question why. Thi
s talk is about the abstract nonsense that goes into developing a\nlanguag
e like Julia. How does a small language become a general tool for programm
ing and guarantee speed that is close to C? Why version 0.4 is awesome? Wh
at you can expect in future releases?\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nJeffrey Werner

DESCRIPTION:[Julia](http://julialang.org) is a high-level\, high-performan
ce dynamic language\, it uses just-in-time compilation to provide fast mac
hine code - dynamic code runs close to the speed of C\, and orders of magn
itude faster than traditional numerical computing tools.\n\nThis workshop
will be divided into 4 parts:\n\n**1. Analytics and data science with Juli
a**\nWe will demonstrate an end-to-end example of a data analysis workflow
\, from downloading publicly available data to loading data into Julia\, c
reating summaries and answering business questions using [visualization](h
ttp://gadflyjl.org). You will also learn how to create [interactive UIs](h
ttps://github.com/JuliaLang/Interact.jl) to play with ideas at the speed o
f thought and eventually deploy user-facing applications entirely in Julia
[without writing any JavaScript](http://escher-jl.org/).\n\n**2. Julia la
nguage constructs**\nA complete overview of the Julia language\, which inc
 ludes concepts such as functions\, standard library\, types\, multiple-dis
 patch\, macros\, introspection\, modules\, packaging and a brief look at t
he language infrastructure.\n\n**3. Working with big data and parallel com
puting**\nWhat would you do with a thousand processors? In this session we
will explore the parallel computing capabilities of Julia\, integration w
ith [Hadoop file system](https://github.com/JuliaParallel/Elly.jl) tools f
or setting up data processing pipelines.\n\n**4. Pair-programming: build y
our own Julia application**\nIn this session you will pair up with a teamm
ate to build a simple application (e.g. a recommendation engine) and deplo
y it as an auto-scaling REST applcation on JuliaBox or locally.\n\n### Spe
aker bio\n\nThis workshop will be conducted by the core developers of Juli
a most notably [Jeff Bezanson](https://github.com/JeffBezanson)\, [Stefan
 Karpinski](https://github.com/StefanKarpinski) and [Viral B Shah](https://
 github.com/ViralBShah)\n
