Manage the cost of Javascript

Submitted Dec 17, 2018

The outline of my talk

  • How does browser work?
  • What does it mean by the cost of Javascript?
  • Experiment with the website of my company (https://www.mercari.com/jp/)
  • The concept of Performance Budget
  • How to integrate the idea of performance budget with my own project

Key takeaways

I want my audience to get the idea of the cost of Javascript and how it can help on
improving the Time to Interactive metrics, and users satisfaction.

Target audience

Intermediate and advanced frontend developers are my main target audience,
but it’s also good for product manager to get the concept and the benefit as well.

Speaker bio

I have five years experience as an engineer and have been working in startup company and also big companies such as IBM, Rakuten. Now, I’m working as a frontend engineer in Mercari, which is the first Unicorn company in Japan. I think I’m the best person to take this session because I came from business background (master degree of business in U.S) but also passionate about programming, so when I do programming, I’ll always think how to align technology with business goal. Other than that, I feel like most of frontend engineer only knows how to create application but reluctant to dig into what happens under the hood, which may do damage to the whole web world in terms of speed of the webpage, accessiblity...so on and so forth. As a result, I’d like to get into things under the hood to help engineers make better decision and make the web a better place.
