DESCRIPTION:This research topic proposal was developed to investigate the
impact of assistive technology in the students with disabilities’ succes
s within the context of college academia. The principal argument of this w
riting suggests that the lack of awareness of assistive technology by prof
essors creates barriers that violate the rights of the individual with a d
isability under U.S. law. Several theories were explored that were relevan
t to learning and human development. Research methodology for this paper p
resented a comprehensive survey from the National Survey of Student Engage
ment. This assessment tool measured quantitative outcomes in college stude
nts-with-disabilities engagement. Key findings revealed strong connections
to theories within the literature review and evidence of the impact that
the lack of knowledge and awareness of assistance technology have in stude
nts with disabilities’ success at the college level. Concluded remarks s
ynthesized the overall findings linking assistive technology\, class engag
ement theories\, students with disabilities and instructors’ awareness.
Recommendations collectively expressed further research on this topic\, ap
plication of the findings for institutional effectiveness\, and encouragem
ent of diverse\, supportive\, egalitarian\, and equitable college environm
 ents.\n

DESCRIPTION:While most autocomplete widgets simply aren’t created with a
ccessibility in mind\, since the W3C introduced the WAI-ARIA standard in 2
014\, there exist concise requirements regarding accessible implementation
s of various interactive usage patterns. Sadly\, the WAI-ARIA standard isn
’t easy and compatibility varies a lot between browsers and screen reade
rs. As such\, it’s still a pain to create an accessible and robust cross
-browser/platform/device autocomplete according to WAI-ARIA. Instead of ap
plying WAI-ARIA\, it’s possible to create most interactive usage pattern
s by dividing them into simple HTML form elements\, connecting them with s
ome JavaScript\, styling them as wanted\, and adding only a tiny bit of AR
IA here and there for polishing. The result is a widget that relies on roc
k solid browser standard behavior in most of its functionality – a widge
t that’s compatible with each and every browser supporting basic HTML\,
CSS and JavaScript – and as such\, assistive devices like screen readers
get everything they need for providing good interaction to their users. I
n one sentence: it’s a widget that’s truly working for all (and extrem
ely cheap performance-wise). During the first half of the presentation\, I
will investigate the accessibility of some well known autocompletes (like
  Google’s\, Select2\, jQuery UI’s\, etc.) using a desktop and a mobile
screen reader (NVDA and VoiceOver/iOS). I will then show the idea behind
using traditional HTML for creating non-standard interactive usage pattern
 s by demoing an accordion\, a datepicker\, a tablist\, and a carousel –
all implemented using HTML form elements. During the second half of the wo
rkshop\, the audience will be given advise on how to create an implementat
ion of an accessible autocomplete\, first by dividing this usage pattern i
nto its basic HTML form elements and then connecting them using JavaScript
and a tiny bit of ARIA (if needed). Another screen reader demo will proof
the work done. At the end of the workshop\, the attendees will have under
stood that a lot of interactive elements on websites can be implemented us
ing traditional HTML form elements\, resulting in great usability\, access
ibility\, performance\, and cleaner\, lesser code. Intended audience: UX f
 olks\, Frontenders\, Accessibility folks – everybody who’s interested
in creating clean and working HTML

DESCRIPTION:The Ola Mobility Institute (OMI) has partnered with nine pro-d
isability organizations to understand urban transport accessibility challe
nges. This study focuses on the experiences of Persons living with locomot
or and visual disabilities along with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communi
ty. The modes of transport covered include metro/local trains\, buses\, au
to-rickshaws\, taxis and auto-rickshaws & cabs attached with technology en
abled platforms i.e. mobility aggregators. This upcoming report by OMI cap
tures observations and insights on the travel experience of PWDs shared th
rough semi-structured interviews with 20+ men and women living with a disa
bility. These findings have been supplemented by Focus Group Discussions w
ith 11 men and women with disabilities to capture the actual and/or antici
pated impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the travel experiences of PwDs ac
ross the various modes of transport.

DESCRIPTION:Finance charts quickly render hundreds of data points making i
t seamless to analyze a stock’s performance. Charts are great for people
who can see well. Those who are visually impaired often use screen reader
 s. For them\, the readers announce the data points in a table format. Beyo
nd a few data points\, it becomes difficult for users to create a mental i
mage of the chart’s trend. The audio charts project started with the goa
l of making Yahoo Finance charts accessible to users with visual impairmen
 t. With audio charts\, data points are converted to tones with haptic feed
back and are easily available through mobile devices where users can switc
h between tones and spoken feedback.
