Creating accessible React applications

Accessibility is never finished and as technology advances, the knowledge and awareness of accessibility will always need to keep up. This August, we have Anuradha Kumari who will talk about the topic “Creating Accessible React Applications”.

About Us
With web technologies moving at a fast pace and driving businesses toward greater heights, digital accessibility is the key to achieving success. However, realizing digital inclusion cannot be achieved by one person. It is the millions of people who drive technology and business, joining their hands that will result in the materialization of this goal. This include accessibility enthusiasts, evangelists, developers, designers, testers and policy makers.

Helloa11y is a community initiative founded in 2020 towards realizing digital accessibility. It aims to connect those million dots through learning and sharing, be it online or in the physical space. We aim to bridge the gap in accessibility via

  1. Empowering through knowledge sharing
  2. Empowering people with diverse abilities in active participation and engagement
  3. Bringing the right people to educate and enable the untapped power of digital inclusion.

Creating accessible React applications

Submitted Jul 27, 2021

Accessibility is an inherent aspect of web development. There are lots of misconceptions around React suggesting it makes it difficult to create accessible applications. In this talk, we will debunk this myth and explore how we can create accessible React components through practical examples. The main topics for discussion will be as follows: 1. A brief introduction of a11y 2. Explore case studies for some important use cases with React code, accessibility issues that can block out the assistive tech users entirely from proceeding, and how to fix those. 3. Dive into the accessibility tree to see how can the assistive technologies understand web content and how we can use that understanding to create a robust document structure.

The key takeaway: A deeper understanding of accessibility and some core concepts which will help the audience in contributing to a more inclusive and accessible digital world. The audience can apply the tips to their React projects right away.
