The Process-Oriented Mindset: A Beginner's Guide to Elixir

Submitted Jul 27, 2026

Most modern runtimes treat concurrency as an afterthought—a maze of locks, async/await state machines, and delicate thread management. The BEAM virtual machine flips this script entirely by placing lightweight, isolated processes at the very center of system design.

In this introductory session, we will explore how the Elixir programming language leverages this “process-oriented” model to make concurrent programming approachable and resilient. We will walk through the core syntax of Elixir, break down the fundamentals of the Actor Model, and examine the famous “Let It Crash” philosophy that powers fault-tolerant OTP supervision trees. To wrap up, we will take a high-level tour of the modern BEAM ecosystem, highlighting how these primitives enable tools like Phoenix, LiveView, Ash, and Nx.

Whether you are completely new to functional programming or curious about message-passing architectures, you will walk away with a clear mental model of how BEAM processes operate and why Elixir is uniquely equipped to build self-healing, high-concurrency applications.
