Getting Started with Contributing to Open Sources

Submitted Dec 7, 2015

This talk focuses on helping students to get started with contributing to open sources.

Outline

Contributing to open source projects comes up with a lot of exciting things with it.

Newbies usually have questions like :

  • Where to start?
  • What to choose?
  • How to find out a project which matches my skillset?
  • Is GitHub the only thing to get started with open source projects?
  • I don’t how to code, can I contribute to some open source project?
  • My doubt is stupid, I’m afraid no one will answer?
  • No one replied my mails how can I get answers of my question?
  • I’m stuck, how should I go on fixing it, will mentors reject me if I ask this doubt?
  • Why should I contribute to open source projects?
  • What will I get if I contribute to open source community?
  • Is it necessary to learn Git?
  • What is a bug tracker?
  • Are there any summer of code programs other than Google Summer of Code?

If you search you will not find a guide which has everything about getting started with contributing to open source. We want this talk to be that guide for the first time contributors.

The topics we aim to cover are

  • Introduction to Git and GitHub
  • Bug Trackers?
  • How to find Newbie friendly bugs
  • Introduction to IRC
