DESCRIPTION:## About the workshop\nModern data platforms are built in laye
rs — from how data is stored\, to how it is managed\, and finally how di
fferent tools discover and access it. In this workshop\, we'll walk throug
h that journey together.\n\nWe'll start by looking at modern columnar file
formats like Apache Parquet and Apache Arrow\, understanding why they bec
ame the standard for analytics and how they differ from traditional row-ba
sed formats.\n\nFrom there\, we'll explore open table formats such as Apac
he Iceberg and Delta Tables\, and see how they solve challenges like ACID
 transactions\, schema evolution\, partition evolution\, and time travel.\n
\nFinally\, we'll discuss the role of catalogs\, why they matter\, and how
solutions like Apache Polaris\, Hive Catalog\, and Unity Catalog enable g
overnance and interoperability across multiple compute engines.\n\nThe wor
kshop combines concepts with practical demonstrations so participants unde
rstand not only what these technologies are\, but also why they exist and
how they work together in modern lakehouse architectures.\n\n---\n\n## Lev
el and duration\nLevel: Beginner to Intermediate\nDuration: 3 hours (with
 a break in-between)\n\n---\n\n## Audience\nThis workshop is intended for:\
 n- Data Engineers\n- Analytics Engineers\n- Data Platform Engineers\n- Bac
kend and Software Engineers working with data infrastructure\n- Database E
ngineers and Architects\n- Students and professionals interested in learni
ng about modern data platforms\n\n---\n\n## Takeaways\nBy the end of this
workshop\, participants will:\n- Understand the differences between row-ba
sed and columnar storage formats\, and why columnar storage is preferred f
or analytical workloads\n- Learn how Apache Parquet and Apache Arrow are d
esigned for efficient storage and processing\n- Understand why table forma
ts like Apache Iceberg and Delta Tables exist and the challenges they solv
 e\n- Explore features such as:\n - ACID transactions\n - Schema evolutio
 n\n - Partition evolution\n - Time travel\n- Learn the purpose of catalo
 gs and how they enable:\n - Metadata management\n - Governance\n - Inte
roperability across compute engines\n- Leave with a clear understanding of
how files\, table formats\, and catalogs fit together in a modern lakehou
se architecture\n\n---\n\n## Background knowledge requirements to attend t
he workshop\n**Required:**\n- Basic SQL\n- Familiarity with files and tabu
lar data\n- Comfort using the command line\n\n**Nice to have (_not mandato
 ry_):**\n- Exposure to Spark\, e6data\, Trino\, DuckDB\, or similar query
engines\n- Basic understanding of data lakes or cloud object storage\n\nNo
prior experience with table formats or catalogs is required.\n\n---\n\n##
Software installation details\nParticipants should install the following
before the workshop:\n\n- Docker Desktop (or Docker Engine)\n\nDetailed se
tup instructions and the workshop repository will be shared before the ses
 sion.\n\n---\n\n## Workshop Plan\n**1. Columnar File Formats**\n- Row-base
d vs. columnar storage\n- Apache Parquet\n- Apache Arrow\n- Compression an
d encoding\n\n**2. Open Table Formats**\n- Why managing data as files isn'
 t enough\n- Apache Iceberg\n- Delta Tables\n- ACID transactions\n- Snapsho
 ts\n- Schema evolution\n- Partition evolution\n- Time travel\n- Hands-on e
xamples\n\n**3. Catalogs**\n- Why catalogs are needed\n- Metadata manageme
nt and governance\n- Apache Polaris\n- Hive Catalog\n- Unity Catalog\n- Br
inging everything together with an end-to-end workflow\n\n**Wrap-up**\n- Q
&A session\n- Discussion on real-world adoption\n- Best practices for buil
ding modern lakehouse architectures\n\n---\n\n## About the instructors\nRa
jath Gowda and Lakshmi Narayana G are founding engineers at e6data. \n\n--
