Submitted by Paritosh Umesan (@paritoshumesan) on Apr 15, 2019

Session type: Short talk of 20 mins Status: Rejected

This crisp talk focuses on the challenges (or opportunities) which IT4IT and Engineering Productivity organizations face (or should seize).

The journey starts with why we need a system to seize this opportunity in place and the challenges one may face while they embark this journey. It will cover metrics, data and insights that needs to be produced and who will be the right target personas to be addressed to.

  • Problem/opportunity statement
  • Understanding data needs for embarking this journey
  • Identifying right metrics and KPIs
  • Data pipelines & data storage system
  • Data visualization, interpretation & notification
  • Benefits

    Few questions:

    1. What is the basis of these insights? Will you share case studies to substantiate the conclusions and comparisons made in this presentation?
    2. Who is the audience for this talk? What kind of organizations – concretely – will benefit from listening to this?
    3. The problem statement is unclear.

The presentation in the current form is abstract and high level. We need to see details, including real-life case studies, in order for this to be relevant and valuable to participants at The Fifth Elephant.

Apologies for the delay. Please find the details:-

1.This is based on data lake (on Elasticsearch) which we build internally for Salesforce on Engineering Productivity subject area/domain.
2.Following two segments will be the right target audience:-
Segment 1 - Data Engineers, Data Analysts,Data Scientists and ML Engineers (who can take away a domain and business case which can add tangible value of this is not tapped in their organisation)
Segment 2 - Product Managers and Engineering Leaders ( Dev tools & services) in product companies, CIOs and IT4IT in Services and Captive companies.
      3. Opportunity/Problem Statement

“Companies that create exceptional customer experiences can set themselves apart from their competitors.” - Mckinsey Quarterly

Most of the firms in the business of building products and services do understand the value of customer experience (CX) and try to give emphasis to customer experience during various touchpoints.

The same cannot be said when it comes to the emphasis and implemenation of Developer Experience (DX). Developer Experience is critical as it helps developers to be productive and motivated. Data is required to measure the state of Developer Experience. Do we have the right data and framework to derive insights to elevate the developer experience to next level?

      Problem Context

In an established setup (firms with mature products) a lot of time is spent on non core (development) activities by developers be it setting up environment, checkins, builds, waiting for test results etc.

If we extract the data from tools and services used by them and then persists in data store then it can be leveraged to extracts insights, benchmark and plot trends. These can be used by engineering leaders or CIO to improve the services and tools provided to their developers.
